Fishing in Alpha One

I'll keep this short and simple.

Right now fishing in alpha1 is ehhhh, something left to be desired at best. You go too river, run along it with your trusty stead until you see the glowey thing. You fish and then its over and you repeat it. IMO That's not fishing, I imagine fishing would be something like you stand in one place at a river or the sea with your fishing rod and bait, you catch a fish then get the hook back out there again without running to another place. I know this is a problem with AFK Fishing with macros and stuff. So what if too prevent that you had a system where if a fish bites you have to hold E so it stays in the middle of a bar. let go of E so it goes down and repeat as long as its in the middle. High tier fish make it harder.

This is just an idea, but my main point is that fishing should be just sitting down and fishing. Now to prevent AFK fishing you could go with what I just said or something else. Just not fish one fish then run along a river for a new glowey thing to fish. I hope it changes.

I understand this isn't how professions will be on release but just giving my opinion now with the current system.

I havent tried fishing yet, but i could like this and quite enjoy this. it would add a certain "skill" aspect to the game where the higher your skill level in fishing, it would make the bar larger or the fish just easier in general based on tier to skill ratio.

Fishing should have some form of interaction like a small reaction mechanic. Also adding RNG rares (different fish or small treasures) can make fishing a lot more interesting.

I actually prefer AOC's version of fishing to WoW - I like the holding "e" mechanic better than clicking on the bobber. But, I agree, it definitely invites a more AFK playstyle. Potential for botting abuse as well since it's limited interaction.

Oddly enough, I haven't had to hold E to loot anything at all. I click e once and the item loots or gathers. Might be a bug but it's a good one if so haha. I hope this is not their goal ultimately. I think these are horrible implementations. Forcing button holds and melee combat movement locks just feels wrong.

I hope that we'll get additional depth in fishing, but I agree finding nodes that only give you one catch feels odd.

I would hope that different nodes would come and go based on how many fish were pulled out of the area, and a mini game to combat afk fishing and to also help with whatever fishing profession comes into play would be very nice.

Then perks to investing in fishing could be more fish per node, higher chance of better fish, making the mini game easier, or even nodes that can't be seen by those without the investment.

I hope the idea is to make gathering, and crafting in general something you have to make real decisions on and have those that choose to invest in a path better than those that don't. Similar to what we've got for combat, with choices for skills and those that have invested in leveling have advantages over those of us that don't.

I wouldn't mind at all if there was an introductory questline for gathering that gave you some of the perks, but then gathering without investment would be hard. Rewards the investment, and keeps the economy in better shape because not everyone is a gatherer.
  • Whether or not anyone likes the game New World , the fishing mini game is fun IMO. ESO has a mini game too. It was ok when I played that game. I think New World has better fishing.
    ( Not my videos )

I have not fished in AoC yet but most games have a mini game of some sort.

I am all for eventually having fishing competitions , pools with many fish. The whole nine yards.

I would argue that ALL the gathering could use some more interaction.

It feels like many players have been conditioned with other MMOs that fishing is typically the one 'special' gathering type that has a mini game attached to it. But why just fishing?

    For example:
Herb picking - keep the normal 'standard' style for those who enjoy that. (what we have now)
Tree Chopping - an quick/small accuracy mini game (click a button at the right time)
Mining - action combat pick axe swings with special popups to aim at (akin to what crowfall gathering is)
Fishing - keep the fish on the line minigame. Press and hold a button to maintain a bar at a specific spot. (akin to albion online fishing)

One of the main appeals of this game to many is the idea of specializing in different areas, and I think distinguishing each gathering type adds a little more to that list of player specializations.

I like this suggestion, and would like to add to it
Fishing requires the right kind of bait. You're not gonna catch a salmon on earthworms. Fighting a Marlin or tuna takes incredible strength and endurance. Fly fishing for trout takes small lures and a very enjoyable amount of skill to keep the fish on the hook with light tackle

Mining... When you're digging, you hit larger rocks that impede your progress. sometimes you need to change angles and wiggle your shovel under the offending rock, and pry it out

Herb gathering... Do you you rip the whole plant out of the ground? NO, you snip off what you need allowing the plant to continue to grow in the wild. I would, however, absolutely LOVE to be able to find herb plants in the wild, or at merchants to replant in my homestead herb garden. You have to place them in your garden where they are happy. Soil type, soil PH, full sun, partial shade, full shade, watering frequency...

Logging... There's a science to that, and if the tree falls on your character or any other thing.... It/them/you should take significant damage

Jep more like the Minecraft version of fishing

well on rivers its hard to see but at beaches you see actualy fishes in the water swimming in a circle that indicates a fishing spot

but i would like to see fishes behave like mobs swimming around alldo inorder to gather them you cant kill them you need to fish them. but they also get a respawn timer so if you fishing to long on the same spot or at the same lake you might end up with having fished all the fishes. so you have to repositioning yourself to another spot that has fishes. and with that not every river section and lake may contain fishes.

in the ocean there might later on even be the possebility to fish with boats so insted fishing one by one you fish with some mates in a groupe on a boat with nets and u get way faster more fishes that you would if all of the groupe would have fished with poles.

that would also add dept to the game and environment.

but for alpha 1 purpos the current system is good. the other may be more for alpha 2 or beta

Honestly I’m fine with how it is now but it’ll be abused for afk fishing so that’s why it should be changed. And fish in any one spot with water without moving for every fish you catch
