Skin creator platform for fans

Hi all!

I've always had this idea in my head when it comes to MMoRPGs and it's basically a "skin online platform" where fans and artists can submit their designs and skin ideas for anything (transmog, mounts, households etc). Kind of like Counter Strike when creators submit their skins or like Hearthstone features designs from fans/artists in their decks. There are so many talented people out there and I am already seeing some amazing fan art pictures of Ashes of Creation stuff so I think it would be such a cool feature!

It would work in such a way where there is a section on the website where people could submit their skin designs (following Intrepid's guidance on file type, size and all that) and then Intrepid could validate those skins they think are worth implementing in the game giving credit to the author of course. They could even make a gallery where we can all vote for which skins we would like to see in game and Intrepid could even run theme events or skin competitions (for example best axe weapon skin, best water mount or best Halloween armor set). Basically taking the Community Creations one step further.

I'm not sure how complicated/viable it would be or how it would work copyright wise but considering how much we all love skins and having a baddass looking character I think it's a good idea!

I know I'm daydreaming thinking this could be possible and it's probably quite difficult to do something like it but hey ho, dreaming is free lol

What are your thoughts?

  • I would rather Intrepid just employ artists for their shop. Valve's model for CSGO and Dota 2 can be pretty predatory. Artists put in hours and hours of work just for the chance for it to get put into the game. If it doesn't get in they don't get anything for their work. It's basically working for free.

As an idea it sounds great but when it comes down to it, this just sounds like lawsuits waiting to happen.

EQ2 has been doing this for over a decade.

Players submit items (usually in game furnature), and if the developers think it is up to standard, they put it on the store and the creator gets a percentage of the sales of the item.

While it is true that players may put a lot of time in to something and get nothing out of it, this is all known before hand and if the creator is not happy with the model they can simply opt to not engage with it.
