Seasons! :)

I just signed up!! The only seasons game I ever played was ryzom but it only affected resources. I'm wondering if seasons will affect the magic system?

I look forward to being apart of the community!

What are you thinking about? Like stronger ice magic in the winter and earth/air magic in spring an fall? :)
It would be nice to have it ;)

Well yes wouldn't a frost mage be more powerful in the winter climate? As a fire mage would be weaker while it rained?

I just think seasons could play in many influences in the game and help immersion. A blocked road is one thing but not casting a fireball while it's raining?

    Just interesting thoughts

I like the thoughts in this. Steven has said that seasons will effect some things, but I'm not sure (I'm a forgetful person OK!). But stuff like; walking slower (in winter, due to snow), cant run for a long time (because its so hot in summer) sounds really cool. I also like the elemental increase and decrease Dante suggested. I'll try talk to Steven (the creative director) about it :D If you want to talk to him, or ask him some questions, you can join the games discord! Steven and some of the devs hang around and talk to us there!

Yes, having seasons effect magic strengths would be amazing, and how about stealth, hard to sneak in freshly fallen snow with those footprints appearing....

I just think these ideas open the world up more.

    I've never used discord?

Well. If you haven't used Discord, it would be great to start now! Discord is like skype except along with contacts, its mainly all servers, which you can join or create. Our Discord server is a big part if you want information. We get some sneak peaks, Discord exclusive information and as well as the games Creative Director to talk to us! Here is a great video and introduction about Discord :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rILeDVyeGO4

I haven't played any mmos I can think off where this was ever even thought of in the first place, but in game during night or a dark forest where stealth would come in handy escaping from the creatures that roam there or to get to your home sounds amazing.

    Great thinking kamui! ?

I love day/night, weather events like floods and seasons. Its ok to have pretty flowers in spring and seasons make the world look lovely but I also want it to mean something more.

I'd like to see NPCs that change with day and night. An example was LOTRO where ghost quest givers came out at night.
Id also like to see NPC merchants pack up shop and go home. If you wanted to sell your stuff you'd have to go into a tavern.

I'd also like to see mobs that change with the time of day/night and the time of year. For example Kithicor woods in EQ1. It was a newbie zone by day but an undead filled high level zone at night with some epic raid mobs. If you were running across the world, it was exiting to see if you could make it through the woods before night time and if you couldn't, would you survive?

I think seasons will be interesting in how they could effect resource gathering. say farming you can farm different materials in different seasons, maybe certain animals come out only during x time of year. This could have a fun effect on the economy in the game as well where summer mats end up being more pricey in the winter.

    Seasons, OMG fapping !!!

The poster that mentioned seasons affecting magic, is on to something. It could also affect Armor , weapons etc. I like how that sounds.

Player behaviour affected by seasons? It's an exciting prospect but people may feel penalised if the weather effect is too substantial without some way of getting around it or alleviating most of it.

It could be as simple as the clothing you wear.
    Winter>Thicker>Stamina or equiv -
    Summer>Thinner>Stamina or equiv +

Autumn and Spring could be neutral or affect other things.
  • You would have to be careful to not make the affect OP, but it seems like a lot of people do like the idea. You would just have to make sure the spellcasters didn't feel like total wimps at certain times.

    Super excited for seasons!
I can't wait to see how that plays out!!
  • super exciting in this game.. cant wait.. xD

a changing environment is always nice for the player and keeps things interesting, a lot of mmos always look the same until a patch comes or an event. its the smaller things that count

  • I like the idea of having an elemental buff based on the seasons. Although I don't believe the buff should provide a huge power increase, instead I believe these seasonal buffs should give boosts to stamina/magic drain or stamina/magic regen.

If something like this were to be implemented I would like to see this be applicable to all classes/roles and not just mage/magic classes.

Perhaps we could have seasons aligned to different deities and if the current season aligns with your corresponding deity you would receive buffs like: 10% EXP boost or the aforementioned stamina/magic regen boost. Or perhaps you could pray once a day and receive a more powerful boost for 60 minutes such as: Faster HP regen or a defense boost. Something like this could only be used once per day and only during your deities affiliated season.

The seasons being implemented the way there are is amazing and is the 1st game i have seen with consistantly changing seasons. i would assume the seasons with effect the playstyle by both character and creatures and resources. if not then thats a shame. but with all they have came out with so far i wouldnt doubt the seasons play a big role

In ESO many argued that werewolfs should be powerful at full moons and weak at new moons.
They argued vampires should be strong at midnight and weak at midday.

I come to realise that EVERYTHING must have a time and a place.
It is ...what defines all of us.
By inference that means they must have a place and time that they dont fit.
And I love the nature of duality.

Many have bought new ideas to evolve such concepts.....and I love them.
Whether they can be implemented I dont know.
But it would indeed be something special

I believe something was said about Some Mobs only spawning during Certain Seasons. But it's still early and anything is possible I guess we will have to stay tuned and see what happens..

I read that there will be events tied to seasons and depending on how the zone or server deals the the events will determine how long the season will last. That's a cool mechanic.

Love the fact weather will affect game play.

The devs said that it's possible that an Ice Dragon could prolong winter if it's not killed.
But, each season typically lasts for a week.

Weather should not affect class abilities. However, I think weather can/should be used to reduce character movement speed and visability. It can also create character fatigue. (hopefully the game will include that...WoW had that for swimming) so if your character has been out in a snow storm for a while and then enters combat he/she should slower than a character that has been out all day in mild spring day.

Why should weather not affect temperature-based class abilities????

Tbh it would break the balance of classes. It's really interesting but impossible to deal with it.

I know they've referenced weather a handful of times in various streams and conversations, wanting it to effect gameplay. I think they're still waiting to see HOW much they can allow it to affect things though. Like, in the discord Steven has said : It has an important role in gameplay and mechanics how crops are developed and dungeons are available, hazards, etc. It will affect trade routes and economy. ( aocwiki ) But that's a bit vague because we're not sure HOW. Just that it will.

Or in the Lazy Peon QnA ( aocwiki ) it was mentioned that events will bring weather and crops will be affected, water will freeze, etc. So they're definitely going to have it impact the game but how is much further down the road.

A lot of ideas here are really cool though and I really look forward to more information regarding it.
