In-Game Notes - Discussion

I want to propose a Notes tab in the game.

Legit like a small notebook you would have where you can write whatever you want. Maybe you found a really nice fishing place you want to return to, so you write down the coordinates.

Or you are in charge of your guild's crafting supplies and you want to write down who donated what.

I know most people use like a word document for this, but tbh, it would be better if it was in game. There can be some mechanics added as well, sharing your notes with other players or something.

Maybe we can make different "chapters" like "mining, questing, fishing" etc, and you share your mining notes with a friend or maybe you made notes regarding a dungeon or a boss when you fought them at lvl 20. Now you are level 50 and your friend is 20. You can't help them do it, but you can give them notes you have, helping them out.

I know there are tutorials, but tbh, i would prefer if the game promoted in-game mechanics rather than 3rd party.

There are lots of different stuff we can do with something as simple as an in-game word document. What do you all think?

I keep notebooks for such information, which seems to work just fine. I can also organize them however I want, rather than rely on generic schemes in the program.

It is a good idea to have notes rather than attempt to rely on memory alone. However, since this adds complexity to the game programming, I would just as soon not have it so that we can get the game a little sooner.

Same, I have a stack of little notebooks for each mmo. But I’d rather spend $1 at CVS than have IS spend $1M implementing this when there are higher priority core game systems in the backlog.

  • Is it that complicated to code in a keybind-able tab with an embedded text editor with headline-able pages? I don't feel that resource wise it would be complicated, keep the UI very simple.

I kind of visualise onenote as the ideal option. A searchable "book" with titles for pages, and then the contents, and that's it.

The likelihood is that people will continue to use physical books/docs on the computer if it's the only option but I can see an in-game notebook having its merit. And it does at least seem like a far less complicated requests than others have suggested.

Just stumbled upon your post from a while back about adding a Notes tab in the game—what a neat concept! I totally agree with the idea of having an in-game notebook for jotting down coordinates, guild supplies, and boss strategies. It would definitely streamline gameplay and foster better teamwork. I've been using notesonline.com for my personal notes, but having something integrated into the game would be even better. Did anything ever come of this idea? It sounds like it could've added a cool dimension to gameplay!

This doesn’t sound too complicated to implement. Although I’d refer to it as a player’s journal. Definitely see role players using it.
  • Notes system is amazing, and then have a Note tab in each character so you can write notes about each person
PvE means: A handful of coins and a bag of boredom.

I know it's not "in game" but it sounds like if we wanted to at least write notes for our characters, we might have that option with the character sheet. Anyone who uses multiple screens (or the bigger ones where you can split it) can have the sheet up on one side while gaming on the other.

The character page will be accessible in game by opening a browser through the UI.[3]

That's part of the character sheet desire for us which hopefully will be accessible in game as well by opening a browser through our UI where you can get back history of a character that that character has input themselves into journal entries that they may choose to share with others... For role play perspective we want people to be in depth with their characters.[3] – Steven Sharif

I'm with @CROW3 and his comment above. I find it much more efficient to use notebooks than something imbedded in the game. Why?

    - I can design things exactly as I want, both topics and subcategories
    - I don't have to manipulate the screen to refer to the notes. For example, I can quickly glance at the page with my guild's KoS list in the notebook by my keyboard as I continue to sneak up behind a character - rather than having to stop and tab into the online notebook
    - I don't have to be online to use my notebooks. I can use them at work during a meeting, on a plane, a train or a bus
    - I can use arrows, Interpage references of my own design, footnotes, symbols of my own making which I am familiar with
    - and Etc. ad infinitum

Not to be a debbie-downer. But this sounds complicated and quite messy to implement. Also sounds server/memory heavy if there ends up being 10s of thousands of these ever changing notes. Sounds nice in theory, but I don't forsee this happening.
    • "so you write down the coordinates." - How would this work? Right click on a certain location on map with a pop-up menu to copy coordinates? When pasting that into your notes, would it just the be coordinates or would a thumbnail of location pop-up along with coordinates? Or were you planning to take a screenshot of location? If so, an upload button would be needed to upload that screenshot into your notes (Again, server/memory heavy here). Intrepid doesn't want players to be able to upload anything on their own like that. If JUST coordinates, how would you memorize what Is what location? I think having just a simple option to favorite a location on your map with a pin would be easier to implement here.
    • "I can use arrows, Interpage references of my own design, footnotes, symbols" - Sounds very server/memory heavy here.
    • "embedded text editor with headline-able pages" - Same note as above.
    • "hopefully will be accessible in game as well by opening a browser through our UI where you can get back history of a character that that character has input themselves into journal entries that they may choose to share with others... – Steven Sharif" - ESO has a similar way. It has a small word count limit where you can put in a line or two about your character. You can view this when you highlight your character in your member guild tab.
