Unpopular opinion? (Animations)

Idk about the rest of you, but the ethos behind the animations, to me, is… how should I say this… lacking substance, or a grounding and relatability.

The effects look great, but I think the ball is really being dropped here.

While mostly fluid, the animations lack any force or motion physics, or personality.

A punch for example can be weak, strong, balanced, or recklessness, and there isn’t any “feeling” conveyed behind the spell and ability animations.

I don’t want to rip on the animation team, but I feel like there’s no “feeling” or art behind the motion.

If it was me.. and it’s not obviously, I would prolong the animations, let the movements be different and have longer or shorter animation times for specific spells / actions / have different classes convey feeling behind movements.

A cleric goes through different training than a sorcerer, and while one might focus on casting with hand-signs, the other might focus on chanting.

I think this is an essential factor for games. Imagine for example if a dumb brute of an ogre attacked smoothly?

Maybe this post wont go anywhere, but I feel like since this is a game built for the mmo community, and I have the opportunity to say something that could improve the user experience of the game and allow players to have more of identity to choose when it comes to classes, i should.

When playing, I like to FEEL the character’s moves, imagine myself doing them, and there’s a huge disconnect for me here watching the videos now since they all just move, there’s no “motivation” as they say in acting… you can deliver a line “hey whats up” bored, inspired, excited, or sexual…. The same goes for motion.

As it stands, to me… the animations are sterile, without motivation.

Maybe something to consider.

Still super early in development this still will get better as we go forward.
Most people never listen. They are just waiting on you to quit making noise so they can.

    The animations aren't done.

  • I get that, but I feel like since they aren’t done, something needs to be said about the direction. A small reminder, that feeling needs to be conveyed.

    It's taste man.

These Ashes animations could be final or close to it, and it would be fine.

Some love WOWs simple animations that don't animation lock. Some hate them.

Some love BDOs over the top animations that lock you into moves. Some hate them.

    It's all taste.

These taste bland… like boiled chicken… sure it’s nutritious… gets you through the day… but the spices keep you coming back, they engrain themselves into your senses, and the next time you smell them walking down the street, you’re taken back to that time….

Good feedback, written reasonably. I hope you stick around.

I agree that it's a little bland at the moment.
but I'm hoping for improvements, coz the mount animations have been fire!

Welcome! There’s a few threads worth reading to get a sense of the combat animation discussion. We’ve been going back and forth on the animations for literally years, with the latest tuning happening in late summer.

I’m sure there’s going to be more adjustments over time, especially if they update the engine.

IMO - the animations are - ok.

To you... Some people find too much flavor repulsive. It makes them never want to come back... some people think mayonnaise is spicy...

To continue this analogy, right now you are tasting that chicken while the finished dish is still being prepped.

The spices and other major flavor components are still to be added.

While feedback is fine and all, keep in mind that you are literally tasting that piece of chicken that is about to have spices and such added to it, and you are saying that it needs spices and such added to it.

As feedback, this really is the kind of thing that warrants a blank stare for a few seconds, followed by the person just quietly carrying on with what they were doing.
  • I just hope they keep animations on the minimalistic side instead of the super-flashy standard of today.

There are some things that we look at and aren't happy with but we assume that they'll be improved upon since it's pretty early in development. It's worth talking about now, though. What else can we do? We're waiting for the next testing phase (those of us with access) and talking about stuff is pretty much all we can do.

On the other hand, animations are something that they've explicitly said are not done. The effects are flashier than they will be, and they will make significant improvements. There will be multiple passes before release.

It's certainly worth talking about, and suggestions about what doesn't look right should be welcome. But the animations are one thing guaranteed to change.

Don't forget to use the Forums search feature every once in ahwile, @KingFil.

A simple search could have turned up other recent threads for you ... indicating that it's still too early to have a measured discussion on the topic (since Steven & Team have acknoweldged animations aren't done).
