My discussion is from a neurological and psychological stand point and the brains processes.
To start I have to define a few things so people understand this viewpoint.
From a perception view in these science fields, data is any information gathered by your senses.
I want to clear some things up, combat systems alone do not account much for density, complexity, or rich environments, the data a person gets comes from the rest of the game.
MMORPGS are data rich by themselves (Video Games nothing but data). In the virtual space, some areas are more dense then others. Neither define the complexity of the data, the devs also do that. They are coding data, assigning visual and audio data to their variables in 3d space for players to disseminate and interpret using your eyes, ears, and fingers.
Combat doesn't exist without the data aforementioned. A combat system is one of the components in which a player engages with the data and it results in many neuro-chemical reactions within your brain, usually with the intent of many chains of dopamine spikes.
The tab and action combat cycles allow you to engage and receive the data differently and the player preference is merely based off of which one gives you the dopamine kick you desire.
Why should you prefer tab or action over the other? Because in a sane, emotionally and socially intelligent society it's just simply your preference. If you don't feel like free aiming abilities and you like the dice rolls, then like it. If you rather engage with the data provided to you because you rather acquire, track, strafe, and engage your target based off your tactile-kinesthetic senses, go for it.
Here's what some of the forum goers miss, tab nor action are more or less complex than each other, it depends on how the devs built the game as a whole, some tab systems are more complex than action, some action games are more complex than tab.
Action games require more in terms of disseminating data because there's just more data variety for a player to interpret but most typically in a Player versus Player. The amount of time, money, and resources it takes to code an AI to make action combat engaging against the pure environment is why you will notice most often that action combat players are PvPers. It doesn't mean action combat can't be engaging in PvE, it just means it costs more than what it's worth to most studios.
Action Combat can be incredibly engaging provided a studio has enough time, money, and resources to build such an AI. Difficulty depends on what data players themselves are
Tab target games usually have greater data complexity for a few reasons, but RNG is what I want to focus on; but it's mostly in an environment scenario where the data a player engages in is AI. You can plan all you want (strat), but RNG requires constant adjustment to their execution (tactics).
It doesn't mean that tab is more difficult than action combat, RNG allows for AI that's not nearly as time consuming, expensive, and resource heavy as AI for an action combat game would require.
So let me wave away some misconceptions for some of the forum goers here, tab does not require more intelligence than action. Action does not require more intelligence than tab. Tab allows you to engage more complex data, action allows you to engage more data variety.
Data Density depends on what activity you're engaging in virtual space which are already data rich environments.
Here's why I support the devs in their vision of combat after the live stream. We will get the most out of Ashes in terms of an engaging game. They have the ability to pick action and tab apart, put the pieces together for maximum amount of engagement.
And that holds value to me.
I do not condone the licking or smelling of your screen as you will receive no data from Ashes and you will probably get yourself killed ig and probably sick irl.
