Open world waters are a pvp zone, said the devs

Automatically naval content, which I always used to ignore in other mmos, has become one of the most exciting features of AoC for me.
Why? Because if I need to reach an island with my tiny boat, for a quest, or because I think there is good xp per hour there, or if I need the materials that can be found in that island, I KNOW, that until I reach those shores, I will be pumped with adrenaline.
Naval content became meaningful once more in video games. Big battle ships will have to be PROPERLY manned, with the proper weapons and cargo space. If you are going to try to carry goods from the one main landmass to the other you will NEED TO MAKE IT A GUILD ACTIVITY.
I didn't play much AA so I dont know if there was more meaning to naval content other that trade runs and raiding, if pvp was unreastricted or not. If AoC took these ideas from AA good for them and good on AA for doing that before hand.
Whoever I see riding around on a seal or a turtle or some other larger than life mount that they "tamed", I will KOS.
Best news for naval content. I hope there will be depth in regards to material transferring. I hope there will be islets with Quests that people will find good reason to complete because these things will make the seas a big adventure. The flagging system would complicate the mechanics around sinking a ship or attacking its weapons but that's all answered now. If you wanna travel the seas be organized either as a big trading guild like in real history, or as pirates. Can't wait.
Who will make the strawhats guild?

Where? im looking for somewhere to talk about this exact topic
@Asgerr
I feel like this will make a lot of people who are like me not want to fish at all and go with one of the other gathering professions. the only ones who will be willing to fish are the people who enjoy pvp, which is totally fine but when we can only master 2 professions it seems like fishing will have the most risk for what seems like no extra reward. Maybe this will mean fish are always in demand so they can make a good profit from fishing?
All im saying is think of it from an artisan player's point of view, there are a lot of people who just want to craft and gather in MMOs, and most of those people will look at the list of gathering professions and see that fishing is like asking to be robbed every day lol. so i think fishing will have a lot less people than other professions because this change. It doesn't effect me because i will be mining and wood cutting most likely, but it just makes me sad that i cant go out and just have some fun fishing from time to time without knowing the water is just a lawless cesspool of murder and piracy.
I suppose it would require a quote from the devs to be sure, but I would assume coastal activities would be safer than deep sea excursions. Fishing I would imagine could be done from shallow waters or just standing on the shore so you would be safe.
Maybe they could make where if you want to go after the Moby Dick style catches you need to be in dangerous waters and need some help.
There will be warning messages alerting before you reach the auto-flag to Combatant areas.
It's quite likely that there will be unique fishing opportunities in the open seas, with Steven expecting that players who wish to reap the rewards of those unique fishing opportunities will be willing to risk flagging as Combatant.
As to fishing, I expect that to be similar to Archeage as well.
The game had costal and fresh water fishing, which is where you got most of your crafting component fish from (carp and such). But then it had deep sea fishing that resulted in game fish (tuna and such).
Game fish were your money maker, not coastal or fresh water fish.
IMO how it should be:
With this being said, even Basic Freshwater and Coastal Fish should have their uses in Alchemy/Cooking etc.
None of the fish should just be sold for Gold like it worked in AA. All should tie into the profession system.
Same, I've got too many meta guilds to grief to be worried about seal bashing turtle torturers.
Only once you're in "international waters" do you autoflag. There will be plenty of surface area on the sea that is still within the Node's ZOI. So as a fisherman you just fish in the "territorial waters".
After all, your resource gathering etc, affects the XP granted to the Node. You'd be removing half of the ROI for resource gathering if you did it in a neutral zone, outside of any Node's ZOI.
That was weird and dark
