I could go either way on this. Having it open leads to chaos, and that can be fun. You could have people from another node come in and just join one side or the other tilting the battle. If it's close then the battle will be "even" at least in number and can be balance which can be really fun, leads to strategy and planning. With so much open world already it makes sense to add in a game play that is more controlled. I wouldn't mind seeing the castle sieges closed and the city sieges open, or less closed? As long as it works!

I would assume it act like a battleground in WoW where it load up a copy of the area with the castle in an instance so there no invisable walls or anything in the real world.
This will probaly be done to insure quality performance since slideshows are not always the best to play, but if they have a way to make it openworld without performance issues then they probaly would.

Actually would like to see post-seige aerial view footage!

Well there be people on flying mount there since nodes war will often have a mayor or castle seiges often have a Guild leader or what not both which get access to flying mounts i beleive. Tbh i think Devs might get in on recording some of the fights too. However if they do instance the battles you might be allowed to have spectators in that can fly about but there need to be a delay of 15-30 min so u cant give out information and what not

For immersion, it would be better to see the siege happening, as you approach the city. And then decide what to do.

Games are not always %100 about immersion. There are many other reasons it may make sense to design the game with instanced PvP events like this.

just off the top of my head:
    • Server stability/performance
    • Higher quality PvP matches
    • Allows players not interested in PvP to continue to use the city as normal.
    • Structured PvP can just be more fun overall. (ie: League of legends, CS:GO, Battlefield, etc)

Voice of reason thank you, i have hope for humanity now lol. Sieges are serious business you don't need people trolling them that aren't even part of the war and having targets that are immune or dmg or can't be hit further confusing you.
Why would anyone be immune in a place of war? Everybody close to the point of action should be considered a participant.

You most likely are aware how wars work but it is set people that fight in the war to prevent zerging and make it competitive. Not anyone gets to be in the war.

If you want to watch make friends and watch a stream that is the best way. Some people will want others watching, some people will be more chill.

There's pros and cons for Castle Sieges being instanced and not.

From my experience with other similar GvG events, I believe that it's best if Castle Sieges are instanced in a controlled environment, where only the people allowed to fight in that battle are able to fight, avoiding problems that could affect both attackers and defenders, while "breaking" realism a bit. With that said, I hope that declaring a Castle Siege isn't something trivial and maybe it could require some owPvX inside/nearby the Castle in order to do it.

In an ideal world it would be non-instanced.

It would need a lot of work and testing to make it feel right for every1 and everything involved. The spectacle alone would be a selling point for the game. An MMORPG living up to its name for once...

However, it's muuch easier to make it instanced. Not to mention, the tech is not there yet. It would require a summoning ritual to get those aliens who made Planetside 2 possible a decade ago to create something like that for this game as well. Not to forget, they'd need to bring their alien tech with them for this to work out though.
