Corruption Question

What's to stop a max level player from griefing gatherers to steal their materials, and then handing their materials and gear to a friend and having that friend kill them to remove corruption? Are there any real consequences for griefing in this scenario?

- Exp debt is meaningless to a max level player
- Since their friend holds all of their gear and materials they'll lose nothing

Xp Debt since you will get more with every kill. Mainly that atm. Might not be worth it to do that a lot tbh. Since you wont know how many mats people have and only get half of them.

-Exp debt doesn't just entail loss of experience numbers. It also drops your combat effectiveness, thus making you weaker against npcs and players. There's no definitive answer yet for how much or how long that may last, so potentially the corrupted could take a big enough hit to their stats to make the rest of their play session a drudge.

-Unless something has changed, corrupted individuals are considered monsters by the system. So can't trade. Not to mention even if they were killed anyway, the corrupted would be teleported randomly on death. Could take a risky few minutes to get back unscathed. Might even lead a few bounty hunters right to the party.

There's definitely some downsides to consider before popping a green. Hope this helps alleviate your concerns somewhat.

While the above answers are perfectly valid, the thing that will most directly prevent specifically what you are talking about above is that you cant trade with other players if you have corruption.

Nobody really knows yet, but we all hope Intrepid won't allow for corrupted players to easily share their loot with their uncorrupted friends without some (big) penalties, e.g. high equipment repair cost.

Once you're corrupt you can't trade. So you only drop your gear upon death and still lose a bunch of materials.

However if a friend is willing to help you in that way (looting your body so as to avoid your gear being lost) then there is nothing to stop it. Nor should there be.

There is still a risk of people coming after the corrupted player and a second player helping said player, may go corrupt as well. Even if there aren't players trying to kill you, anyone could ninja their way over and steal the loot from your friend.

At the same time, it can create situations in which a "friend" steals your shit and you never get it back, sparking interesting conflicts, potential guild schisms etc etc.

Thanks everyone, I think this is the main answer, that "experience debt" actually means quite a bit more than it's name suggests. As long as a player has experience debt, they have skill and stat dampening, lower health and mana, and lower gear proficiency, so it is a hole that even a max level player will have to dig themselves out of, disincentivizing griefing in the scenario I suggested.

Although I have to say, it makes experience debt sound like an overly burdensome penalty in all of the other cases where it's applied. Imagine how frustrating it would be to be ganked and then as a result have to deal with all of these debuffs hanging over you while you dig your way out of the resulting exp debt.

Corruption doesn't make you weaker verses NPCs but the experience debt will affect the drops you receive.

Yes this feeling of loss or penalty will be quite the rude awakening to many players I feel. They will either cry that it's unfair or see it as a way to learn to be a better player. You do not want to throw your life around carelessly, which should make players more attached to life than they would be in an mmo such as world of warcraft or ff14.

That penalty is there not only to make deaths meaningful, but to encourage fighting back against gankers too. Say you lose 2% on death and at top lvls 2% is smth like 4h of farming mobs or repetitive quests. Flagging back up would not only give you a chance to survive, but would also assure that you'll only need to farm for half the time in case you do die.

And even if the corruption gets removed from just one kill (if you're at a low PK count), that would still mean 16h of farming. Now obviously that might be nothing to a time-hardcore player, but that would be 16h that he's not PKing anyone else, which is the point of the corruption system.

Imo it works out great for the overall experience and balance of the game.

Was that a recent change? I must have missed it. So it only affects the combat of corrupted vs. other players now, yes?

Pretty sure it's been there from the start (or at the very least from 2 years ago). The XP debt part of the stat dampening is different from the corruption's stat dampening, so you might've combined those together?

But yes, when you have a lot of corruption your pvp stats will be dampened relative to how much corruption you have. But you'll be able to farm mobs just fine, because it's one of the ways to remove corruption.

Thanks, I must have some Mandela effect going on or something. Everything since kickstarter has been a blur.
