Backing the game, low tier purchase, wanting to upgrade later an option?

Wanting to Back the game, entry tier purchase, but also wanting to upgrade later an option?
Example.
backing at the basic entry price of $75.
If a few months later, having more cash to spend. wanting to "Upgrade" the original $75 with a higher tier, like the $150 / $250 / $375.
Is that upgrade price reduced by the previous purchase. e.g., original purchase at $75, upgrading to $250. upgrade price would be just $175? etc.
Just asking, as I would like to have the top tier backing but cannot afford it in one go and saving up for a one-time purchase isn't always a viable option...Takeaways are always too tempting >.<
Thanks.
