Line of sight / at Sea render distances

It would be great to see the render distances at sea change with the height of the observer. Ships used to have crows nests, where a watchman would stand say 40ft above the main deck, giving him a line of sight distance several miles further than that of somebody on deck.

I'm kinda wondering about this in general now that you bring it up. I didn't see anything in the wiki from a quick search for clipping or view distances or whatever. I love having very long view distances, but there's obviously a big trade-off in performance.
