Nubie Question: Crafter or Killer

AoC is more complex than I 'get' just yet. Thinking about how I want to start... I am confused about how crafting and adventuring skill points work with or against each other. I don't want to build a mediocre adventurer who is also a mediocre crafter. Does skill point assignment require the player to pick a crafting focus vs an adventuring focus? Or is it totally feasible to advance both efforts abet over time?
