Religions - Important or not

Hey everyone,

First time here and was just curious about the religions system in this game.

I feel like i'm getting a few mixed reviews. I checked the Ashes Wiki page and I read that religions are an important part of the game but it's moreso a horizontal progression kind've thing, but when i read up on the augments i see that religious achievements will be an add-on to normal augments to primary skills. Does this mean that it'll actually affect things like damage and real gameplay advantages or is it more likely suggesting something of a cosmetical nature?

Would appreciate some insight

The Wiki page has the answer to that, too, @lowpriority ... although it might not be until Beta when we will be able to test full religious progression and augments.

We don't really know, yet. It's going to be enough of a feature that it'll be worth delving into, but we haven't really heard the full details as yet.

Please feel free to theorycraft here, though!

Is there a Stufferton option for a religious deity?

As Davey said, we really don't know very many details at all about the religious aspect of the game. But, given the detail and innovation that we have seen in other game systems, I suspect that religions are going to be really cool.

I suspect that a character's progression through the religion they choose will have a significant impact on the character's abilities and various yet unknown bonuses. I also expect that as nodes develop religious shrines, it will allow the production of quite useful augments for weapons, armor, and other gear (perhaps including pets and mounts). Given the plethora of different religions, this ought to allow significantly different builds to specialize in fighting different types of mobs (Holy, Undead, Physical, etc.).

So yeah, religions is one of the large mysteries yet to be revealed.

My assumption is that most players will assign a fairly low priority to religious advancement.

Don’t rule it out so quickly: we don’t know what divine buffs Stufferton provides. 🤔

I totally agree with you, @Noaani

Which is why I think it is probable that players who dive deeply into the religious game will end up having advantages that most players won't understand. If the potential advantages of religious enhancements approach those of other (more familiar) parts of the game...such as adding +3 power to your sword, crafting better armor and jewels, or adding iron fangs to your battle pet or summon...then the early adopters of religions will have a head start. Maybe.

It will be one of my deep study areas of A2, for sure.

As far as I am aware there are augments for a select few who invest themselves deeply with a religion, which I would suspect is why it is "horizontal progression". The amount of commitment to gaining access to these augments will make it hard / impossible to have access / equal efficacy or mastery of other augments. Basically I think it will be a tradeoff rather than an no-downside-advantage.

There are also the additional skills high ranking religious figures can gain during siege events. These however are unique advantages for which equal advantages exist when achieving similarly high ranks in other Node power structures.

And lastly, I think the greatest importance religion will hold seems to be when it comes to lore (and possibly story progression) as everything in Verra is more or less a consequence of the actions Gods or Ancients have taken in the past and plan to take in the future with us being thrown in the middle of that war.

But with all that being said, their is no conclusive list for religions impact yet and I don't expect to get anything like it before the project reaches the Beta stage.

The answer is probably >>> HERE <<<

I would hope that they play a role in things and its not purely horizontal, because otherwise it'll be a prime candidate to get cut once they start projecting release dates and such.

Horizontal in that it provides new Skill Augments that can be optionally applied instead of using your 2nd Archetype augment. It shouldn't provide vertical progression, otherwise it will become "mandatory" to get the most power. Instead it's just another option to build a unique character.

Religion will however play a major role in the religious Node type, so it will have it's distinct advantages in parts of the game. We'll have to wait and see what other advantages it has.
