Question about Family Names

Since Characters will have a first-name and an optional surname (last name). when you join a family does your last name automatically change to the family name? or if you didnt enter a last name beforehand will it just be added on?

Already a thing.
In-game a character's name is displayed above their head. This can be the first or last name.[14]
The family systems has nothing to do with marriage beyond adding a 9th to the "circle" under last information given. They have never stated that all family members end up with a same last name, and from what they have said how they envision the naming system working, most likely will have nothing to do with it. Now, if you want to RP as a related family, you will most likely have to make that choice on creation. There are no plans for name changes as server reputation is a planned mechanic. And allowing people to change names on a whim, whether a paid service or not, would negate those plans.
