Suggestions for Freeholds ... ... (October 2023)

Crank out your Artworks, Picture, etc Please, if you want.
I dream of the Moment where i could have a Freehold Building on a cool Place like a Mountain Path. A steep one.
Like,
One Meter or Two beside my House at some Point -> STEEEEEEP way down the Slope. As a Fan of snowy Landscapes and Mountains - i would love myself a Place like in this Artwork here.
Wouldn't this be FFFFFF~REAKIN' cool ? Something like the very short Remnants of what looks, like there was formerly a Bridge there, connecting this Side to another Mountain Path a good bunch of Meters further away from outside the Perspective of this Picture.
I could imagine putting my Freehold there. Preferably maybe like Five to Ten Minutes of walking without a Mount away from my Node i would love to support and be a Citizen of,
with me being able to invite others to be my Guests there. Exchange Stories - maybe make new Allies along the Way.
Or this here. This could also be a nice Addition regarding Freeholds.
A Freehold in a dark, swampy Forest Area. Somewhere more or less deep in the Woods. This here is a Tent, but a Place where we could build a normal Freehold Building or one of the cosmetic Ones would be needed regarding the Size. This Tent is a little bit small.
( I think the scary Unseen Order Building would look great in a scary Swamp or Forest. Hr hr )
One more Idea for a Freehold House and Estate on a Mountain Side. I bet many People would love to have this. One Freehold just like this, or similar.

Indeed. One would need to be veeeryyy careful with his Steps there.
One Requirement if one would want to live at such a Place would be -> NEVER - get drunk. ( )
This is not a Place where one can wander around without Focus.
One more such an Idea of a Freehold inside a kinda isolated Place.
Again and also - more or less deep in the Woods,
but not necessarily in a swampy Area. More like a wintery Area. Could be in the Place in the World where the Woods are probably always snowy, from how the Worldmap of Ashes of Creation looks,
OR - a Place where dependent from the Season - there could be Winter, or not. But i can toootaaally see People flying with a Location and Freehold like this one.

Player controlled market - I think it should cost what it costs from the node and sold back to the node if you want to move. Giving players control of housing market seems like terrible snowball effect for various reasons such as RMT websites, gold sellers and just absurd land control economical issues.
Thinking back about Star wars galaxies... A lot of the player built cities via housing plots and what not just ended up becoming barren back allies that flooded the server. I imagine there will need to be some sort of upkeep or tax to maintain active free hold use? Having them somewhat restricted in density creates mini communities opposed to sections of the map turning into subdivisions.
Considering free holds will have various options for crafting stations I am glad they're not pay to use considering they will cost fuel for many recipes but keep it as a permission allowance so players just are not running from free hold to free hold crafting aimlessly. Having them limited to journey is smart in my opinion as it encourages players to mobilise to the node for higher tier crafting. Otherwise, the free holds would just bypass many trade routes if players created a silk road that bypassed the game mechanics for fair play by playing leap frog from one free hold to another.
Why are you using the op to try to turn it into a complain thread. Things are fine as they are and will be tested. Go res another thread if you are trying to complain.
complaint? no.
it's a suggestion thread considering the title literally says "suggestions for freeholds".
Going off their opinion of concept art and location discussion, it is technically relative.
1. You are ignoring the context and content of the post only using the title to try to spin a different narractive.
2. You are definitely complaining if you suggest something is a terrible idea based on your own bias." Giving players control of housing market seems like terrible snowball effect"
Jepp.
Also, did Players not already discussed " Phasings " like for Example in World of Warcraft ?
Where - in the Case of Warlords of Draenor - everyone could have their "own Garnision" in the same Place as everyone else ?
I think if such a thing would ever come to Ashes of Creation -> it probably won't be in the early Game at first : and Sir Steven and his Co-Developers would need to probably create an own Server-Type just for this.

It's constructive feed back like Intrepid ask the community to give. I don't see why you would assume I'm complaining by providing some reasoning based on my opinion in a thread that literally implies suggestions for freehold. The word is specifically plural implying more than one suggestion. I never ignored their post, I actually read it and provided information in relation to it.
WoW's design definitely works better in terms of phasing to accommodate the global sharding design to make the game seem fuller of players than it actually is.
In my opinion, doing phasing for free holds would make ashes design feel less open world in terms of cohesion. They do have some instancing or phasing planned for certain things for certain dungeons / raids as 80% dungeons are open world and 20% are hard instanced.
Similarly events like node sieges which require declarations and set dates to reduce chaotic issues such as zerging, economic exploit, outside interference and overall server stress. The world isn't necessarily truly open or without transition regardless of how seamless.
Having free holds relatively phased with plans for players to acquire land from the node to create micro communities within the node would reduce that especially if the node siege plan is still to carry over to free hold looting post victory to some degree or not.
If players/guilds rush to get the deeds first and get control of land for free holds they can essentially control the market if they control the price of it which means hypothetically, many of those ideal location you dream of may never be able to be acquired because of absurd profits players can acquire from it which will snowball as players will continuously add interest on their investment so when they sell again, they make profits.
I dont mind the idea of still having auctions for it, but the currency should not go to the player per se, just the initial investment because if currency becomes too abundant without appropriate ways to gold sink it, the game is essentially an upper and lower class game.
example:
Hypothetically if a free hold on average cost 100k currency, the persons who gets it first can hold it and choose to sell it for 1 mil. If several players pool their currency together, they can easily create market inflation to own the freehold and choose to sell it for 1.5 mil down the road and so on. This doesn't get rid of currency in the game, it retains it by moving it from one hand to the other. If they were able to refund the deed at relatively retail price of said node yet still have an auction to some degree where the game just eats the excess gold, it keeps the games economic inflation down so new players or guilds on the server have a chance to an affordable market.
Gold sinks are important in the game. The idea is to reduce the total amount of currency retention and not allow it to snowball so gold sellers and what not can exploit a system.
Tangential but relevant
And Thanks God for that, wouldn't you agree ? In some Instances, like for Example Cities, or to find Group Members for Open World or Dungeon/Raid Instances, i am all for it.
An MMO needs something like "a/the Lobby". If you can never meet with many, other Players and have a good Time, what even would be the Point of a Game being an MMO and not a Single Player or simple Co-Op Player ?
Wew, you put noticeable Thought into this. I admit, i actually have no Oversight over Freeholds right now, regarding how they are decided of which Player/s own what Freehold for how long and through what for means.
So the Freeholds are like Auction Material ? The Players can bit on them like every Month, or few Months, or once in a Year ??
This sounds nice - and at the same time a little bit horrible.
So we are most likely "forced" (lol) to try and farm as much Gold as possible if we want to "hold" our Freehold against the Bids of other Players who would also want to have it.
And since the " Losers " of Property Rights can "keep" their Money - it's only a matter of time until they will have more than their Counter-Bidders and will get the Freehold for some Time.
Meaning,
all you "build" on your Freehold will be lost/reset at some Point ?
But my main Concern is -> hopefully nobody will be able to " BUY GOLD " in the Game with a thing like for Example what is the WoW-Token in World of Warcraft.
Imagine someone spending LOTS of Reallife Cash into the Game on a regular Basis, just to keep the Freehold locked for himself forever.
Now that could sound nice for Sir Steven and the fellow Staff. But it would lock Freeholds for People in wealthy Families in Reallife -> "plus" would add something like "Buy to Win" into the Game.
I heard already People complain so much about the WoW-Token in World of Warcraft. Makes me think, maybe it is better if Ashes of Creation wouldn't have such a thing.

kind of, maybe I explained it a bit weirdly
Based on what I understand to purchase a free hold is you have to buy the deed first and go place it as it's an object you keep/carry. Once you put your deed to use it's essentially your land plot. They do have things like taxes and what not in place for free holds for some minor gold sink options but nothing has fully been explained to us in-depth.
What I was referring to in regards to auction was in the event if one was available to own then players would have an opportunity to bid for one at the node in order for a chance to own it as there was mention of auctioning them off instead of player controlled pricing etc. I don't think they're planning on auctioning them off freely or temporarily like time shares lol. But in the event they're abandoned for prolong periods of time incase players decide to not play or whatever reason, then they could also be "condemned" and available for said auctions similarly to provide players a more fair opportunity to own a free hold.
The idea I used as an example was just hypothetical solution to prevent currency retention where the worlds economy spirals and creates exploitation opportunities. If you give players opportunities to exploit like that, they will exploit it especially if the profit return can be so significant. The player who originally paid for the deed at 100k would get their 100k back. If it was auctioned off at a total of 500k but was only worth 100k, then 400k be just removed from the game. Just a simple example, there could be adjustable and minor inflations over time but just simple hypothetical. The game is going to need a plethora of gold sinks of varying degree's to slow down inflation.
In relation to looting post node siege it's still up in the air if this is even happening still let alone specifics on details yet to be revealed. You wont essentially lose everything, you will still own you free hold, buildings etc. They're not aiming for a hardcore experience especially considering how siege declarations will cost a decent amount of money and resources as to why they may only be a monthly event if I remember correctly. There will be some risk vs reward. If nodes are locked in a siege declaration, even trying to deplete your resources to reduce the losses will be relatively locked like frozen assets essentially as they would be part of the prize pool for lack of better words. Even trade routes and caravan limitations are in place.
And you're not wrong, whalers and whoever will try to find ways to pay for things outside of the game. If the economy is broken with inflation or dev's allows p2w with things such as a wow token as an example, it pretty much defeats the purpose of what ashes end game is designed to be. Players in wow can pretty much pay for anything from paying for carries, gold RMT, crafted items, content ratings through other players and achievements.
They've said ashes will never be p2w, so the cash shop in to be cosmetic only.
I realise these Pictures have all a kinda dark Atmosphere on them. But this is more or less to be expected from isolated Places.
Right now Freeholds can't be Taverns - or can they ? This here would be a Tavern in a cold Mountain Area.

Allowing outdoor on-plot cosmetics for Freeholds (crafted exclusives maybe or also store bought to support the game) would greatly add to their curb appeal which is needed to prevent the same ticky-tacks from appearing.
Actually, this sounds WONDERFUL. Great Idea. But of Course it will come down to how much Sir Steven's Developers code the Area.
In for Example the " Garrison " in Warlords of Draenor in World of Warcraft,
People can influence "what" for Buildings - stand in "which" Place. And if they are just small Level 1 Buildings, Medium-big Level 2 Buildings -> or fully enlarged Level 3 Buildings.
This would be glorious if Players can influence Freeholds in different ways. Like a Freehold of someone who is mainly cutting down Trees. Or mainly dismantling Stone and/or Ores. Or someone who is mainly cultivating Plants like a Farmer.
Etc. etc. of Course the "Biome" (Climate) the Freehold is in, would be important for that, too. You can't grow Crops in the Desert or on a snowy Mountain, i bet.

There will thankfully be custom-channels we can join, as well as pre-made channels. You are correct: these are VERY useful, in an MMO.
As far as actual design suggestions? I would think something akin to the tent-idea earlier in this thread is a REALLY good idea, for any of our militarists and Military-Node Freehold styles - something that looks like it could be packed up quickly and moved, in the case marching-orders come down the line.
While the Freeholds have been emphasized as something to be more-functional, I wouldn't mind seeing "luxury" decoration options for the yards around the Freeholds' grounds. Statues, fountains, plain grass, flower-fields, etc. Something to indicate to passers-by and visitors that the owner is wealthy enough to not have to USE their land.
I admit i haven't thought of Military-Groups/Guilds/Roleplayers etc. But why not ?
No idea if this was ever a Topic in the Ashes of Creation Forums -> but was it ever discussed of how much Players shall be able to design the "Looks" of their Freeholds ?
Sounds kinda a little bit like how we can decorate our "Castles" in V Rising. I like the Idea.
Being able to choose between using the Land effectively for something to produce Wares, Products, etc.,
or just make them look neat and very elegant and posh and classy.

A Freehold near a cursed-looking Massiv or small Mountain. Maybe it is cursed indeed. Maybe not. Would be a nice Place for a small Group of Oddballs and/or Misfits.

And once again a kinda "darker" Picture. Hmm maybe i should switch the Gallery i get these from. lol
In an late Evening kind of Atmosphere - either at the Border to some dark Forest -> or maybe even deep inside the Forest, on a more or less huge(?) clearing.

it is quite vibrant for a signature picture
Heheh, Thanks. this is one from Sea of Thieves - the same Game my Avatar is from.
Should i search for the "huge" Version ? ^.^
Anyway, more "happy, colorful - and more bright" Picture Example (Suggestion) what a Freehold could and maybe should look like.
Now i am aware, this here looks already more like s a smol' Node - than a Freehold.
But imagine a beautiful Place, with MUCH FARMLAND around it - nearby a River that supports everything around it with non-salty Water so People can work the Land better,
on a somewhat mountain-like, little bit jagged/rugged like Landscape. Smol' Mountains around. Kinda a small Paradise.
Am i down for it ? Ohhh i am SOOOO down for it. This would be one of my absolute favourite Choices of a Freehold.
Maybe this is just the old " Heroes of Might and Magic Three "-Fan and Nostalgic speaking out from inside me, though.
A few City-Themes from that Game would also fit wonderfully with this Place.

Had a feeling it was the ghost ships in SoT lol.
And wouldn't spooky looking Ghost Ships not be a cool Addition to Ashes of Creation as well ?
Not claiming here that they would need to look exactly the same ... ...

I mean... we dont know what we'll see out on the seas yet
SoT water physics is next level. I hope we see some solid boat navigation skills too with wind dynamics and currents.
You realise then it was already "next Level" back in 2018, right ?
Next Artwork for a Freehold, Please. * rummages through the Internet Box *
Now this one here is a lovely one. A living-Community-looking Freehold at a Lake or River.
I am aware Intrepid Studios and Sir Steven have their own thing in Mind -> Freeholds will probably always look the same, or we may have only the Option to choose from a few things like Pre-Order Packs, or our Characters "Race's Culture"-looking Buildings,
but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be okay to post such cool Idea's for Freeholds here, now should it ?
