Crafting unique cosmetics - like character creation modifications?

Not sure if this has been discussed before, but what does everyone think of the idea of having some system for unique "templateable" cosmetic modifiers when crafting items? Just like how modern character creators can modify jaw sizes, nose sizes, hair colours, style, eye colours, tattoos, etc. Could it be possible for the crafter to modify (within reason) the aesthetics of their crafted items?
Now i'm not talking about making absurd changes where the item becomes unrecognizable. We should still see important information that the item conveys regardless of whatever modifications are allowed. But just a couple extra things that we can do to make our item's aesthetic a little more unique to the crafter or the buyer, while still fitting within an appropriate palette.
Thought about this while watching my kid play some kind of dress up game. She never really likes going out and killing things (AoC might not be for her) but she does enjoy picking out and modifying outfits to look really pretty and elegant.
