I was thinking about world events and how zones could essentially be turned into a raid zones that are very dangerous and "mysterious."
Imagine you are in a zone and a the zone starts to change and there's maybe a debuff that disables flying and grounds characters who enter the zone. Then you have to venture through the zone to discover what is causing it. During that time there could be a good opportunity for story building, small quests, mostly story related that would trigger events for elites and different mobs. It then gets progressively harder the further into that zone that someone is in. Clearing the zone could also give party buffs based. Maybe the buffs are active based on proximity to party members, or instead of just generic buffs there could be things in that zone where clearing it out would cause the boss to be inflicted with minor debuffs like 3% less armor, or has a chance to miss swings. Imagine you clear out a small village area of corrupted villagers and monsters and you find a vial that increases toxin or frost damage for the party by a %, or you break their armory building or weaponsmith elite and the boss does 5% less auto attack damage.
But there could also be a higher challenge where when characters get enough gear they can activate crests that disable the debuffs and they have to clear the zone with all the elitess and bosses buffs active. The bosses don't appear on the map so being cautious in that zone is key.
The boss might be a blood mage patrolling the area with a normal mob group. or a giant ice troll that became unfrozen and woke up. or possibly, a mimic hiding in some cave ruins.

So the world events you describe can happen on the entire map

With how limited flying mounts will be, I don't think they'll "disable" them in any world events or anything like that.

( Okay i admit, the tiny, "red-glowing Eyes" in this Picture the corrupted Ancient One has not. I edited them into this Picture with Windows Paint to let him(her?) look a bit more spooky. 😁 )
But honestly,
believe me there " will " be mysterious Zones popping up in World Event-like Fashion. Also You can safely assume, that if for Example with "Corruption",
a Zone becomes just worse and worse and worse enough, when a Node doesn't take care of the Problem sooner or later,
it might as well indeed evolve into a Problem that only a whole Raid of People - or even more People - will have a Chance to get under Control.
Still in Development, though. Not sure if we will see in the released Game someday soon more than "One" Type of changed Area, like for Example Corruption.
Maybe in the Future, more changes will be added. But for now, You can count on Changes done to the Land becoming corrupted.

Events... can be local, regional or global, and consist of boons or banes. They’re triggered based on a lot of different variables, and some may be one-off Events that occur once, and never again. If an Event is handled successfully, then something good happens to the local, regional, or global area. If it fails, then something bad befalls the local, regional or global area. They’ll relate to the overall Narrative, but don’t fall into its overall structure (for the most part). These are the things that will be written into history, and we imagine that as time grows, each server’s history will diverge more and more.[10]
Some events incorporate random story-driven interruptions to the normal flow of the world, such as blocking off specific roadways, having a random raid boss or mobs appear unexpectedly in a zone. Some may lead to wider consequences, such as climate change, plagues, volcanic eruptions, forest fires, or other natural disasters.[11][3][12][13][14]
There are events that lead to the spreading of corruption that players will have to fight back against. When these events occur players will need to participate to keep the intrusion on the material plane back.[15][16][17]
Events that are taken care of successfully have positive consequences and provide rewards based on the contribution of players during the event.[18][9]

This game is going to be excellent about surprising players. We will have to always keep our eyes open and not 'assume' that logging in today is going to be the same as yesterday's login.
