My two cents on what Ashes need to do to succeed
In my humble opinion, Ashes need to do those two things to succeed. What I will bring here is things everyone already knows but I need to point it out in my mind:
Bring back old MMORPG gamers home: They are Millennials and X generation. For some reason, they do not play MMORPGs anymore. Bad games the past decade, family reasons, work, social life outside games. I’m conscious Ashes will be not for everyone, though.
Bring a new generation of gamers: The newer generation, Z’s here, did not live in the best era of MMORPGs. Back when Mills and X gen got WoW Vanilla, Runescape and Ultima Online. In fact, the past decade was the start of a decline of the genre.
I personally think if Steven succeeds to bring those categories of players, Ashes may be quite popular. Again, AoC won’t be for everyone. I have confidence that he understood that thing a long time ago.

I have personally talked to quite a lot of "new...gamers" who are quite looking forward to AoC.
Based on this tiny bit of evidence, you are predicting AoC will be a success.
That's my wish. I can be wrong but I hope I will be right this time.
The key things for this game to be successful is:
1) game performance aka no crashes, memory leaks, or easily manipulated economy ruining bull-honkey.
2) systems that allow players to carve their own niche in the world.
3) layering different content types keeping both group size and playtime constraints in mind while creating said content.
4) an overabundance of art assets.
5) social engagement as the core of the game.
