Turn off body block while in nodes?

XeegXeeg Member, Alpha Two
I get that body blocking is a part of war strategy and game combat systems.

But do we really want this in towns where people can grief the town by blocking doorways? I would think that this should be turned off while in node.

If this has already been discussed somewhere else and resolved please link.

I recommend only being able to "turn this off" individually for Citizens of the Node - and during Peace Times.

When there is Attackers storming at your Node and to it's vital Parts, i think You and Everyone else "WANT" this Bodyblock-Ability to be like a living Wall of Resistance. Just like in true Reallife Battles.

You don't want the Attackers being able to "run just through" your Lines and charge at the Points they need to conquer. ;)

Only Citizens of the same Node/Faction should be able to bypass each other. I could see it getting cramped easily otherwise, when many People are moving through the same Node.

Hmm.. I like this idea, good way of implementing the same concept.

I feel like a better option than to turn off body blocking be that if your character is blocked by another player (seen as they can see all the data and what is doing what based on the last livestream) having it so that you get a kinda "slide past" kinda effect. So your not just ghosting through people but kinda pushing through in a way.

I personally don't like the thought of running round a city and just passing through everyone as if they didn't exist, might as well put them in a different layer at that point imo. But I also don't want to be stuck in a shop for 20 minutes bevause I can't get past the door 😂 so I feel the "slide past" might be a better fit, they could even have an animation similar to assassins creed games perhaps?

Other games get around this by
    • Allowing dodge roll to go through people
    • Turning off collision in town and/or when not in combat
    • New World had a way to avoid friendly collision in/out of combat. You had to sheath your weapon. Then you could unsheath it and stand inside a stack of 10 of your friends hitting a boss. I don't recommend this
Steven has said that people will have weight, and several people pushing can make even heavy armor tanks get pushed out of the way. Or one light person could push them slowly as long as they did not push back.

I believe it was Stardew Valley that implemented a mechanic that as you push through an NPC after a couple moments of being stuck that NPC jiggles and then you ghost through. What if Ashes were to do something similar. During peace times if someone is blocking your way, you walk into them for a couple seconds then you would ghost through.

However, if the weight system is being implemented like Spif said then the ghosting mechanic wouldn't be appropriate.

Warhammer does this, it works fine.

I hope this is in combat only. Imagine you're trying to use a vendor, crafting station, etc. and a troll just won't stop pushing you away from it. Or imagine going afk in town only to come back dead and outside of town, because someone pushed you into danger.

Agreed that would be annoying and I also would like the body block off in nodes that would get annoying trying to get into a place and someone just afking at a door or w.e.
  • there's the possibility of "pool is closed" pve griefing since its not a full pvp game

so, maybe if no one is in combat and is within the city then body block off
PvE means: A handful of coins and a bag of boredom.

I wonder if you can jump on people, could you make a giant wall of toons?

Why can't it also be a part of social or economic strategy?

It's basically borderline griefing, or it can easily turn into it.

But it also depends on how it works.

In Archeage, you could push players around basically, so even if they are blocking you from entering somewhere, you can push them out of their way, or rather push your way in.
And I do not have a problem with this implementation at all.

New World had to do this at one point because it got to aggravating for people in towns. basically if you were not flagged, or in any pvp mode (arena war etc.) when flagged for pvp or in a pvp area there was body blocking

    playing the devils advocate.
I know in other games you can "push through" when at full health or full stamina. You might have a slight delay while pushing through. I remember in the past there being talk about tavern owners haveing the ability to police their taverns. This was some time ago and might have changed, but it came down to you cannot force anyone out by use of game systems. If you can get pvp'd in your blacksmith shop, then you can get pvp'd in your tavern.

This brings me up to this scenario. If someone is being a jerk in your tavern, and you have collision on, you can basically force/block him physically in a corner, or out the door. You just need people to do it. I wonder if there are going to be "push" mechanics in game. that would be awesome to "push" people out of the way, or "push" people out the door.

Not if they were in a vehicle.

If I am able to stand between a rival and where they want to go to out in the open, why shouldn't I be able to do that in town?

Saying it could be griefing seems odd, as surely either both would be considered griefing, or neither would.

Also, unlike in Archeage, in Ashes the option to attack is basically always there. The only reason XL ever bothered preventing bridge blocking was because it was happening in non-PvP zones, so attacking was not an option.

theres a good side and a bad side to this. good side: dont want that annoying person in your tavern block em out. the bad side : big guild non stop blocking access to a crafting station or something important in the town effectively griefing others even citizens of the same node. while there is inertia in place to push / oomph past people blocking you with enough people nothing will stop a big group blocking off something which is the problem.

Inertia and momentum physics will help prevent blocking doorways/access points. This is based on a character's direction and movement speed, and can be used to push people out of the way.[4][3]

hasnt stated how much oomph you have or how many people is needed to fully stop this inertia tho
