Dear Development Team and Community,

As we continue to evolve and enrich the world of Ashes of Creation, it is imperative that we consider the multifaceted needs of our diverse player base. Among our most passionate and engaged players are those who immerse themselves in the art of roleplay (RP). These players contribute to the depth and vibrancy of our game world by breathing life into its characters, lore, and environments. As a game designer with a deep appreciation for the intersection of narrative and player interaction, I believe that enhancing the tools available for roleplay can significantly elevate the overall player experience.
The Roleplay Community: A Pillar of Engagement

Roleplay communities within MMOs have historically been some of the most dedicated and creative contributors to a game’s longevity. They transform static environments into dynamic stages for storytelling, social interaction, and emergent gameplay. By supporting these communities with robust roleplay tools, we not only honor their creativity but also foster an environment where narrative depth and player-driven content can thrive.
Proposed Roleplay Mechanics

Below, I outline a series of roleplay mechanics that could profoundly enhance Ashes of Creation’s appeal to both current players and potential new audiences. Each of these tools has been selected for its potential to deepen immersion, expand creative expression, and support the organic development of player-driven narratives.

1. Enhanced Emote System:
A comprehensive and versatile emote system is the cornerstone of any roleplay toolkit. By expanding our current repertoire of emotes to include a broader range of gestures, postures, and context-sensitive actions, we can enable players to express their characters with greater nuance and fidelity. These emotes should be intuitive to use, seamlessly integrating with the game’s existing controls and UI.

2. Text Bubbles for Dialogue:
Implementing text bubbles that appear above characters’ heads when they speak adds a visual dimension to in-character conversations, making them more prominent and engaging. This feature would be particularly beneficial in crowded environments or during events, where distinguishing in-character dialogue from other text is crucial for maintaining immersion.
3. Interactable Furniture and Objects:
The ability to interact with environmental objects—such as sitting on chairs, lying in beds, or leaning against walls—enriches the physicality of the game world. This mechanic not only enhances immersion but also supports a wider range of roleplay scenarios, from casual social gatherings in taverns to dramatic confrontations in a character’s home.

4. Speech and Thought Bubbles:
Differentiating between spoken dialogue and inner thoughts through distinct text bubbles would add a layer of depth to roleplay interactions. This allows players to convey their character’s internal monologue, offering richer storytelling opportunities and more complex character development.

5. Costume and Disguise Kits:
Providing players with tools to temporarily alter their appearance through costume and disguise kits can facilitate a variety of roleplay scenarios, such as espionage, masquerade balls, or undercover operations. These kits should offer a range of options, from subtle changes to complete transformations, enhancing the flexibility and creativity of player-driven stories.

6. Customizable Nameplates:
Allowing players to customize their character’s nameplate—by adding titles, changing colors, or adjusting visibility—can reinforce their character’s identity and status within the game world. This feature supports roleplay by enabling players to convey their character’s role, affiliations, or personality at a glance.

7. Personalized Emote Descriptions:
Empowering players to create custom emote descriptions would greatly expand the range of actions they can express. This feature is essential for allowing players to depict unique gestures, expressions, or behaviors that are specific to their character, thereby enhancing the authenticity of roleplay interactions.

8. Character Profiles and Biography Pages:
An in-game character profile or biography page would serve as a repository for a character’s backstory, traits, and current narrative arcs. Accessible to other players, this feature fosters deeper connections between characters and helps maintain continuity in long-term roleplay narratives. It also provides newcomers with a clear introduction to established characters, facilitating smoother integration into existing storylines.

9. Proximity-Based Chat:
A proximity-based chat system, where messages are only visible to players within a certain range, would mimic real-life conversations and enhance the realism of in-game interactions. This feature is particularly valuable during roleplay events, where maintaining the spatial integrity of conversations is crucial for immersion.

10. Environment Interaction Mechanics:
Allowing players to interact with the environment in meaningful ways—such as lighting fires, setting up camps, or placing objects that persist in the world—creates a dynamic and responsive game world. These mechanics enable players to leave their mark on the environment, supporting more immersive and personalized roleplay experiences.

Strategic Benefits of Implementing Roleplay Mechanics

The introduction of these roleplay tools is not merely an enhancement for a niche group; it is a strategic investment in the overall player experience. By offering advanced roleplay mechanics, we can achieve several key objectives:

Increased Player Retention:
Roleplay communities are known for their loyalty and sustained engagement. By providing tools that enhance their experience, we can ensure that these players remain active and invested in the game for the long term.

Attraction of New Players: A robust roleplay system can attract new players who are specifically looking for a rich, narrative-driven experience. This can broaden our player base and introduce new dynamics into the game world.

Enhanced Community Interaction: Roleplay tools encourage social interaction and collaboration, leading to a more vibrant and cohesive community. This, in turn, creates a positive feedback loop, where the game’s social fabric becomes a key selling point for new and existing players alike.

Increased Longevity of Content: Player-driven narratives and interactions extend the life of in-game content. Roleplayers have a unique ability to create ongoing stories and scenarios that keep the world feeling alive and ever-changing, even between major content updates.

Fostering Creativity and Storytelling: By empowering players with the tools to tell their own stories, we tap into the vast well of creativity within our community. This not only enriches the game world but also creates a sense of ownership and investment in the game’s ongoing narrative.

TLDR;

In conclusion, the addition of these roleplay mechanics would significantly enhance the immersive potential of Ashes of Creation, providing players with the tools they need to fully inhabit and bring to life their characters and stories. This investment in the roleplay community is an investment in the game’s future, fostering a more engaged, loyal, and creative player base.

I appreciate your consideration of these suggestions and would be eager to discuss them further or provide additional insights from the roleplay community. Together, we can create a world that is not only played but truly lived in.

Thank you for your time and dedication to the continued growth and success of Ashes of Creation.

Sincerely,
Ariatras

Thank you for your feedback! I'm glad to hear that many of these features might already be on the roadmap. It’s encouraging to know that the development team recognizes the value these tools can bring to the Ashes of Creation experience.

While it's great to know that these mechanics are being considered, I believe it’s important for the community to engage in discussions about how these features are implemented and integrated into the game world. The finer details—such as the range of emotes, the design of text bubbles, or the flexibility of environment interaction—can significantly impact the overall roleplay experience.

In addition, ongoing communication between the developers and the roleplay community could help refine these tools to better meet player expectations and desires. Even if the core mechanics are planned, gathering input on specific use cases, customization options, and user interface design could lead to enhancements that make these features even more effective and enjoyable.

I look forward to seeing how these elements come to life in the game and would be happy to contribute further insights or ideas as the development progresses. It's an exciting time for all of us as we continue to build a world that not only meets expectations but exceeds them.

    Thanks again for your response!

I am not a big fan of the bubbles. Text, chat, and thought bubbles become a major distraction for me as they take up more and more of the screen real estate. And even start covering up characters and events going on behind them it really is not cool to perform an emote just to have a chat bubble pop over you character while emoting

I do like all your other suggestions. Especially the Customized Emote where you could take the existing emotes and animations and make them into what you want. Something along the lines of an in game mini macro note generator where maybe you can put two or three emotes together into a single button.

Best case would be if there was a few generic unnamed emote animations. That could then be used to make your own custom emote. However, that is potentially development time in animations that may not ever be utilized. So idk

Your chief concern, as I understand it would be solved by something as trivial as a toggle within the game options menu.
