Hey everyone, I've been trying to cut down some trees, pick flowers, and mine iron ore, but all of them said I need a certificate of some sort. Does anyone know where to get these certificates?

In the first little town you go to are a chain of crafting activities. Do that to get your initial ability to harvest and also get a horse. After that, no idea. While harvesting wood I got XP but didn't see any progress bar or anything that would eventually let me know when I unlock the ability to farm other trees.

Same problem, they all say apprentice or journeymen certificate but of course, I'm a novice in everything. I was only able to find Ash and Oak to harvest occasionally. There's no real help on this that I could see and it feels odd that there are tons of items to harvest all around the starting area but none of them are novice level ...

different materials require different certificates which is gained every 10 levels and doing a quest to further it and making the tool for that certificate
    10 apprentice, 20 journeyman, 30 master ,40-50 grandmaster

Sweat of Your Brow is the name of the quest you need to do. See a Trademaster for the quest. It can be all done right there in town up to where you get your horse. You'll be given a cruse set of tools good for any gathering profession up to level 10. However, you can craft or buy novice tools with better stats than the crude tools. Once you reach level 10 in a profession, you can go to the foreman of that profession to upgrade your certificate. At 10, ask to an upgrade and you'll be made apprentice. From there, you can gather the next tier resources IF, and only if, you have an apprentice tool. You can craft the tool at the appropriate apprentice station. You will not want to seek higher certifications in all skills as you are limited to 5 only. When you reach level 20 in a skill, seek out the foreman again to upgrade to journeyman (only 4 can progress to journeyman).

But where are the cert vendors? And, I checked the recipes for art mining tool and it requires slate mold and if it's true I can't mine slate until I have the tool it sounds like a broken loop.

There's quite a few of them if you venture away from lionhold. Little crafting artisan villages. Just exit lionhold and go around the outskirts and you should see the icons popup on the minimap.
