It just... feels bad.
I mean once you realize to go up and click F, cool. It's simple and easy. But is there even a failure chance? First Bear we say, a buddy in my group just pets the thing.
It would be cool if we can choose paths. You want to find animals to tame. I want to find animals for their resources. We do not go about this the same way... but in game, we kind of do. We pet them.
The item in my Artisan Equipment is a Bow, after all. We never see it in use. We see the Pickax, the Ax, and the Sickle... probably the fishing pole but I haven't fished yet... but we don't see the bow in action, or at all.
Maybe this is just a placeholder. And TRUST ME, of the fires that need to be put out right now, this is a tiny issue of almost no concern (as far as Alpha is concerned).
But overall, in Gameplay and Feel... it just, well, feels bad.

But in general; yes - I share your thoughts and I believe a choice regarding "attempt to kill" and "attempt to tame" should be a thing, not just a pet "Oh he had a heartattack and died" or "nice, you got a bear in your inventory"
1. Tracking & shooting. Perhaps with higher hunting skill, you’ll be able to “locate” tracks and follow them to a specific spot. Once in the spot, after X amount of time, the tracked creature will spawn, and you can shoot it with your hunting bow. Higher skill = better track finding and higher level targets to track. Hunting license would be like a permit to do so within the node’s region of influence. Hunting without a permit would lead to “stolen” tagged resources.
For the animal husbandry side of this, instead of a bow you would “shoot” the target with a lasso to capture them. A cosmetic difference in animations/mesh but functionally similar.
3. Placing traps and coming back later to claim captured creatures. Same effect of the tracking/skill to determine quality or mob level… or perhaps the type of trap you set would determine the type of prey you could catch. Ex. Bear trap vs Bird trap vs Grem trap, etc.
Fishing traps could be a similar implantation of this (trap tech), if not already a thing. I haven’t done fishing yet, but have seen a lot of “afk fishing” type comments.
