Let’s Chat About Ashes of Creation’s Visual Identity (Alpha 2 | Phase 1)

Hello fellow citizens of Verra,
I’ve been following Ashes of Creation since the Kickstarter, and like many of you, I’m super excited about what the devs have cooked up so far and what they’re currently cooking. But there’s something I’ve been thinking about, and I wanted to get your thoughts.
With the game currently in Alpha 2 and the team focusing mainly on server stability and performance, I’ve noticed that the art style doesn’t really stand out to me anymore. Early concept art and design looked awesome back then, but that was like 8 years ago When I see random screenshots or people streaming the game, they don’t immediately make me think, “Oh yeah, that’s Ashes of Creation.” I get that the devs aren’t aiming for an overly stylized look and are going for something more realistic and I’m totally on board with that. I just want to get my input across.
I also understand that Ashes is inspired by games like Lineage 2 and ArcheAge, which share a similar aesthetic. These games have their charm, but I feel that in today’s MMO landscape, having a slightly more stylized or iconic art style can help a game stand out. Just to name a few: World of Warcraft, Guild Wars 2, and Final Fantasy XIV have distinctive visual identities that make them instantly recognizable.
I still feel there’s room to give the game a unique visual vibe that sets it apart from other MMOs, even within its realistic approach. Maybe it’s about incorporating some unique cultural elements (which will likely happen when nodes progress and show racial influence), distinctive architecture (at the moment, everything still kind of looks like standard UE5 assets), or even a consistent color palette that makes the game instantly recognizable, even in these early stages. I know visuals might not be the top priority right now, but adding some of these touches could help build the game’s identity.
What do you all think?
• Do you think Ashes would benefit from a more distinctive art style, even during Alpha 2?
• Are there any visual elements you’d love to see that could make the game stand out more?
• Can you think of other MMOs that nailed a unique visual identity early on?
Would love to hear your opinions!
Cheers!
