Persistent Launcher Update Prompt on Windows Startup/Severe Performance Issues when Installing
itsemji
Member, Alpha Two
Description:
The game launcher prompts for an update every time Windows starts, regardless of whether it’s up to date. Selecting "no" does not prevent the installation from proceeding, and it sometimes causes significant performance issues.
Bug Reproduction Steps:
Expected Result:
The launcher should only prompt for an update when a new version is available. Clicking “no” should cancel any installation attempt. If installation is initiated, it should not affect system performance or Windows taskbar functionality. Given that this alpha is only open on weekends, frequent development changes pushed during the week should not prompt users to update daily, as this is disruptive and unnecessary outside of testing windows and instead should prompt users to update on the Thursday or Friday before testing.
Bug Report - Actual Result:
The launcher prompts for an update on every startup, proceeds with some kind of installation despite selecting “no,” and sometimes causes severe performance issues, making the computer unusable. The launcher does not appear in Task Manager, and the Windows taskbar becomes entirely unresponsive during these instances.
Additional Details:
Operating System: Windows 11 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 22631)
Motherboard: ASUS PRIME Z-590A BIOS v3.3
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-10900K CPU @ 3.70GHz (20 CPUs), ~3.7GHz
Memory: 32768MB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080, Driver Version 32.0.15.6603
Monitor 1 (main): OMEN by HP 25, 1920 x 1080 (144Hz)
Monitor 2: ASUS VG249, 1920 x 1080 (144Hz)
Reproducibility: Occurs on every startup; severe performance impact happens intermittently with installation

Bug Reproduction Steps:
- Start the computer with the game launcher installed.
- Observe the prompt to update the launcher.
- Select “no” on the update prompt.
- Notice that the launcher still proceeds with an installation, displaying a message that the latest version is already installed.
- Occasionally, proceed with the installation, and observe that the launcher severely slows down the computer.
- Check Task Manager and note that the launcher process does not appear, and the Windows taskbar becomes unresponsive.

I've tried going through the task manager, but certain times when the installation proceeds (whether I clicked yes or not) the launcher doesn't even show up in the task manager, and windows explorer in general becomes unresponsive. The only solution I have found is to run a new task from the task manager (since win+r won't work) and run command prompt and do an sfc /scannow.
Also, as an aside, today I booted up my computer as I was leaving for work. When I got home, the installer had attempted another install, despite the fact that nobody was home to click "yes" or "no". At this point, I've had less frustrating malware on my computer.
