Spells going on cooldown when not cast

Really happy with the mage (and the bard) archetypes, but having spells go on cooldown when they can't fire (usually line of sight broken) is a bit frustrating. I don't know if this is a bug or intended feature of the class (all classes?), but this is one thing I'd like re-evaluated.
I also think equipping focus items could be made more intuitive, and as I mentioned elsewhere I'd like a toggle-option for AoE trigger effects.
As for spell selection, I'm happy with the choices so far. And I like the option to choose a mobility or defense spell at the expense of another damage spell. It's hard to judge the overall spell selection since we can only go to 25 and expanding the class tree to other magical specialties (in my opinion) should wait until the subclasses are in place. But it seems to have good starting roots to grow from.
