To better understand why I think this would be an important addition, we need to consider the Corruption mechanic from the player’s perspective (which may differ from the developers’ vision). The Corruption system is one of the most crucial aspects of the game.
Currently, the penalties for ganking are significant—losing equipped gear is a huge cost. However, these penalties can be mitigated or even exploited by players who are determined to prey on inexperienced players trying to find their footing. Despite its flaws, the Corruption system is the best solution we’ve seen to a problem that has plagued PvP-focused MMOs for years.
As a player, the Corruption mechanic heightens my awareness as I explore the world, making me more cautious than in other MMOs. However, I don’t feel as paranoid as I did in PvP-focused games like Shadowbane, DAoC, EverQuest PvP, or Ultima Online, where gankers faced no repercussions and had everything to gain—including the contents of my inventory! With the Corruption system in place, the experience feels like a balance between the PvP servers of World of Warcraft and the aforementioned games—a sweet spot that, in my opinion, hasn’t been achieved before in the MMO genre.
That said, I’ve seen many posts and YouTube videos claiming that the PvP system in Ashes of Creation will lead to its downfall. Personally, I disagree. If you enjoy PvP in MMOs, this game represents one of the best attempts to address hardcore PvP and make it more accessible to a wider player base.
{TLDR}
while I like the Corruption system, I believe a few changes could improve it. For example, I don’t think players should lose XP in PvP encounters. There should be lasting effects for the corrupted player, such as titles like *“Playername the Disgraced”* or *“Kinslayer”* (if the victim was a guildmate).
These changes could enhance the political dynamics of the game and contribute to player renown, adding more depth to the experience.
