An Anti-Grief Upgrade for the Corruption System

Fellow adventurers of Verra, the griefing and ganking crisis in Ashes of Creation is driving away casual players, newcomers, and even content creators, hindering the game’s true potential.

But what if we had a solution that ensures Verra remains PvP-centric while protecting those who need it most?

I've crafted an anti-grief system—a simple yet effective enhancement to the existing corruption mechanics. Ready to explore how we can make griefers think twice without breaking the game’s essence? Dive into my detailed proposal below and let’s build a better Verra together!

It’s been said in quite a few other threads already:

Just because corruption isn’t working as intended right now … that doesn’t mean it’s open season to make wholesale game design changes.

Let the devs make the needed updates and then submit your testing feedback, Jassim Salam.

I haven't come up with this concept after the recent Asmongold issue

From a very long time, I've been thinking of how this game can create a balance between protecting newcomers and content creators yet not compromising the non-consensual PvP experience the game is aiming for.

I am not expecting the developers to make a complete rework of the corruption system, when we all know the fact that they haven't even fully implemented the corruption system and the bounty Hunter system in the Alpha 2.

I just want the Intrepid Studios developers to go through the proposal once. I would be happy if they get some inspiration to make some updates to their system, from this model ❤️

The system isn't even fully implemented at the moment and the harshness of the consequences are overshadowed by the fact that this is an alpha test in where many things change and wipes will occur. This alone means people will not have the same attachment to their characters, or their reputation in the community as said character. Unlike most AAA game developers, these devs have a lot of experience with similar systems as gamers themselves. Let them cook a little.

Comeback and address it once it properly implemented
  • I recently read about the "blight" system the developers have implemented, where your "blight" increases with increase in total number of non-combatant attack/kill count you had throughout your game. The more your "blight" is, the higher your corruption earning rate would be when you attack/kill a non-combatant the next time.

They've also given some immunity to the newcomers and players of level 5 and below from griefers and gankers.

In my opinion, these methods are good, but probably would be inefficient, imbalanced and flawed in the long run. Only time and trials can tell.

Not being pushy, but I expect the intrepid dev team to once give a deep dive to this conceptual idea, to take the inspiration, before it's too late to make any changes in future. If they can come up with a system which is better than the existing or what I've proposed, I'd be more than happy to witness it.

I know it's too soon to talk about it for now. So I'll resume the discussion, once I see some improvement in the Alpha.

    It's as easy as this:
Run 2 rulesets. Default, and opt-in PVP.
Let people vote with their feet.

I know why people will bash this idea.. they know very well that the default server will be dead within 3 months, while the opt-in will be overcrowded. No sheep for the wolves.

I can't count how many times I've said this but suggesting inconsequential PvP is just as dumb as suggesting PvP/PvE realms or toggleable PvP.

This is a PvX game and if you are against it's vision then you should should stop following it and try somewhere else. If you can't handle the fact that actions have consequences, you're not going to enjoy this game.

And you're definitely not a wolf btw.

The system currently is overtuned and actually favors the casuals, deterring both griefing and PKing. 😉

    At some Point towards Release,

-> the current Severeness of Corruption will be lightened again, i think. But it will still be very risky to engage into getting corrupted.

    Huh.
I never had the Impression during testing that People greatly engage in ganking other Testers very much.

Is it really this bad as i suspect it could be ?

Seconded! It is like asking to make PvP free servers for a Call of Duty game lol.

Most people here don't even know the meaning of a PvX game. They're either expecting Ashes to have PvP exclusive only for instanced PvP arenas, consensual PvP systems, and keep the rest of the open world PvP free; or they want PvP free servers.

They want Ashes to be just like the other trashy MMOs they play and eventually complain about.

The whole idea of PvX is to venture out to the world with a constant risk of of getting PKed, and trust me, it is not as annoying as you think it is. The key is in balancing the risk-reward of PKing.

If there's an at most 3% chance of you getting PKed everytime you go out of a node city, which I believe is a healthy balance of PvX, people will find the game to be interesting and challenging with hurting the essence of the PvX experience, the game is aiming for.

The developers should take a neutral stance and try to balance, casual gamers and PKers alike. That's one of the few main challenges Intrepid will face, but must tackle to deliver what they've promised.

There really is not that much ganking in this alpha tbh, id be saying the opposite and corruption is over tuned and needs more PvP inspirations

Corruption is indeed drastically overtuned right now for the stability test phases.

It doesn't seem to be super effective for the reckless spawn camping so far, or mob training which will be something to look at once it's closer to the intended design, but there's very little threat when running into other players. It could also be related to there not really being anything much worth fighting over.

Crafting is still fairly hard capped by the lack of resources around, very few people with high enough artisan ranks to be a jackpot hit if killed, and not many areas of contention where it's better to compete than cooperate provided everyone's at comparable levels.

After all, if mobs will spawn constantly with almost zero downtime, there's not much point to fight people out of the area. Rewards for events are also all shared right now.

It's less about Corruption being overtuned (though it is), and more about a lack of reason to actually be competitive.

    Indeed.

And this is why things like the finer details of corruption can't be fully tested until there are no more wipes - basically until the game is live.
