Racial Traits?

Hello, just like to put out my opinion, I am a fan of the old school styled MMOs like Wow and everquest where different races would start with different stats and even have unique classes and abilities, for example if you were a big ogre you would have more str than a gnome which would have more int and be more mage oriented, it makes sense and adds to the immersion of the game, tying in with lore, it didn't lock you into certain classes especially late game those initial stats were more just a token to add to immersion and make these different races feal more real, I'm not a fan of this modern MMO style like FF14 where your just a cosmetic, in ff14 if you went into PVP it didn't matter if you win or loose, your level doesn't matter just gets synced the same as everyone else, gear didn't matter also just gets synced, your abilities get replaced with like 6 pre determined abilities so you are rocking the exact same build as everyone else, when you met someone your class you were fighting your clone, simply no point just the ultimate game for casuals, an MMO should be about more, about loving to play as your unique character with some real immersion into the game, even if they just add a minor ability to each race it would be something, then when in a party you could say oh good we got a dwarf he got this ability or nice the elf has a good range buff that will help, it should be rewarding to be in a diverse party, when you stand there as a dwarf next to an elf your character should be more than just a cosmetic, you should be a dwarf and he an elf like Gimli and Legolas lol when you make everyone the same you make everyone boring, might as well all just be humans.

IMO lore and role play should not directly affect combat. Races should solely be a cosmetic choice. It is a nice thought though.

The UNAVOIDABLE problem is that player cannot change their races on a whim. Any given quarterly patch could nuke racial passives forcing players to make new characters or buy racial change tokens from the store(P2W). On top of that simply players now adays dont want to have an ugly ass character to be effective late game because someone wanted to roleplay.
A middle ground system would be to have racial passives affect the base stats at lvl1 but eventually have base stats equal out between races closer to max level. By the time you hit max level the passives will be eclipsed by gear choices that make up a larger percentage of the build anyways.

OR another system would be to have racial passives affect XP gain towards different trees. For example Orcs learn 2h weapons 20% faster. Dwarves learn crafting stuff faster.
PcNA Eso PvP 1vX Sorc main.
I'm for skill based fluid combat, mechanic counterplay, and player+build individuality.

There are no race traits. It's a good thing too because games like Elder Scrolls Online the traits were good enough that it pigeonholed a lot of classes into playing races that people didn't feel like role playing. Ashes is taking a better approach with backgrounds. So if you want to role play as a Ocr that's a Bard you can pick the backgroup that fits the class.

As a hardcore raider that fought kel'thuzud (never beat him though! *cries*) in naxx before TBC - I hate racial talents and traits. I understand I was in a sweaty environment but this was before gamers would start min maxing the game like crazy.

While raiding back then and now, unfortunately today - everyone min maxes everything to death. If you wanna be X class and Y race then you won't get raid slots because you are sacrificing some ability or 0.05% dps from a trait. Every raid looked the same. You could literally compare pictures of tier 3 guilds in wow and line up the players by class and everyone would look the same. Same gear, same heights, same races. That is very boring.

Consequently I am all for the freedom of expression, personal preferences, etc. It makes for a more interesting and dynamic world.

races are more for flavour than anything and your race will not give you bespoke abilities or stats.
What your race will give you is an augment that you can apply to your abilities that will make that ability unique to your race. (hopefully we get this at level 1 as an 'intro to augments' until we get our classes at level 25)

Most of what you want out of racials come from background. You'll be able to pick a background for your character that may give you stat bonuses and other perks. These backgrounds won't be race locked.

Races don't add anything to the game. It's now 100% cosmetic choice.
