Screen Upon Death

KnottiKnotti Member, Alpha One, Alpha Two, Early Alpha Two
When you die your interface should have a blacked out overlay. Instead of being able to see the game world around you after you die, the screen should be totally blacked out.
An example of why:
As the game is now. Say there's a caravan that you would like to attack but need more information on. You could scout it properly but one way of scouting could be to run into the caravan and be killed. You can then lay on the ground for a period of time and rely information about the caravan to your fellow attackers completely unbothered and have more than a clear view. This shouldn't be. If you die, your screen should be completely blacked out other than the resurrection prompt.

And how long is a typical caravan going to stay in the same spot for your viewing pleasure, Knotti?

    A few minutes tops??

My current understanding of caravan mechanics is defending players want to get it to the end as soon as feasible.

Any amount of time is enough to relay extra information. Perhaps it's a train of caravans? I dunno just using my brain.

That sounds kinda lame, to be honest.

    Situation #2
Your raid has made it deep into the Befallen Forge and you're fighting a boss. You have scouts in the surrounding area watching for potential attackers.
Someone kamikazes as far into the boss encounter as they can and there they lay for the next 5 minutes. Watching mana bars, debuffs, player movement, etc. At the perfect time, he tells his attacking raid to start to engage. This to me is a very cheap way of scouting; it only requires 1 Player and who cares about how geared they are.
The screen doesn't have to go black yes that is lame. But perhaps very blurred or there's a picture to look at lol I can't believe I'm explaining that. Also could have a detailed "Death Log" along with the resurrection prompt. It may add difficulty to smaller groups because the person on the ground can't continue to call out plays, and in raids you wouldn't be able to watch the boss fall - but I mean... that person died, they are dead on the ground. Why should they be rewarded with a view?
And guess what? There's even more situations that this can be used to scout people, imagine that?

I like this idea but I also see how challenging it will be for other people who are in a group with random people, or doing whatever else not spying.

I think ultimately it will make life of many people miserable for very little gain.

You say that until it's used against you for scouting. This game is being designed so that larger scale/organized events are going to be the most pivotal parts of the game - Node wars, Caravans, Boss Battles, Sieges. So I would say that making what happens upon death cater to making those events being fair is more important that the 3 man group grinding mobs.

Yeah, it always baffles me that the dead can chat, sometimes move their camera, or watch things that are happening.

This is fine in certain games, but I really don't like the idea of it in Ashes. Sure, it's a game, but we can't both say 'information is important' and then say 'you can get that information while at no further risk', right?

'Diving' a group doing a boss has enough troublesome and psychological effects as is, without the addition of 'this pile of ashes that I can do nothing about is able to relay data to whoever they like'.

Just the words 'Ok prepare to Raise me in 10s' have changed the tide of many situations for my group... and I'm not sure it should have been okay (not the communication part, having enough context to make the decision).

This is like those terrible 'kill cams' in multiplayer FPS.

Once you're dead - you are dead - it needs to be a black screen. No spotting the location of the dude that sniped you.

COD is completely different game, and it's ridiculous that knowing whether or not the person is cheating is even a concern. It's a game made for simpletons, anyway.
In Ashes that won't even be a situation.
