Why classes? …..they all do the same.

The last days I noticed that more and more all characters round me are doing the same.
Where I am used to….then again because i am old….being able to see what type off class I am meeting…in AoC it’s hard.

Example…
Yesterday i ran into an active event on my Bard.
3 others where fighting the mobs….2 tanks and one archer….well I thought.
They wielded shields, bow and arrows and a where hitting with a melee weapon.
One was allmost dead so I healed and started to help.
Lucky I got an invite….90% of the time I don’t.
I was shocked….
I was in a group with 2 mages and another bard.
They all was wearing the heavy type armor.
The bard was jumping round with bow and arrow.
Mages sometimes casted but hammered away with scepters mostly.
And they did a lot off dammage also….i could see the point in why bother casting….just melee them all down.

Since then I see this all over the place.

Maybe I am old fashion…..but if all starting to look and do the same like all others….its sad.
Classes means you have a type off role in a party.
Maybe I am to low level…but round level 10 I see all look and do the same.
I hope later on in the game the difference gets normal again…because this just looks funny.

Yeah, there is a reason one of them almost died.

Ashes allows players to use any weapon, that doesn't mean you can do any role. However, if all you have is two mages and a bard, throw on a shield and see what happens...

As a mage you can get away with swinging a sword at lvl 5 grems, at 25 you can't.

They'll learn their class or get rolled.

It's called real role playing game with consequences. Much like games like DnD. Where you had battle mages and paladins. You can be Bard in plate fighting with front lines meleeing. Keeping the tanks and Fighters going. You can be Bard designed for supporting the casters. Keeping them topped up and doing more damage. Wearing light armor. Pick your role you want to fill.

Especially in a small group comprised of two Mages and two Bards, I would expect to see at least one of them focus on melee.
For all we know, you may have stumbled upon a future Battle Mage, Spellstone and Song Warden.

At low levels I can see the use for everyone using Heavy Armor; and maybe this will carry on till high levels. I don't know since I haven't gotten past level 11 on any of my characters. When it comes to the few magic attacks at low levels they can generally just be side-stepped (outside the tracking firebolts).

The 'tells' at low levels to identify classes. Look for how they are acting. Generally I've noticed the following...
    • Bards - they seem to 'jump a lot'. Like, a lot... You see someone jumping around like a crazy person, they are a bard. Can also be seen pulling a dozen or so goblins even at level 2.
    • Tanks - The person chasing the mob because they are either too-low, or never bought their taunts. yet.
    • Mages - you see fireballs.
    Ect...

I do not understand two things though. Why, over the past day, mages seem to be using shields (they give like 2% which is meaningless < level 10).. and why level 12 and 13s are fighting in the starting area fighting level 3 and 4 goblins. they need 200k xp at those levels and '50~80' xp it will take forever...

I’ve found kiting a bit easier by jumping. Seems a slightly improved movement speed, especially depending on terrain. Combine that with bard’s faster movement and that may be a strategy to not take a hit. Could also be bunny gamers where normal movement is boring to them.

Higher level PCs in low level areas could mean they are trying to level their weapons, having swapped them, so are working that rather than character experience. Some might also have a kill goblins quest where the lower level areas offer a more efficient collection. Others might be players who find fun in denying other people of their fun.

Agree. Classes look a bit too similar and the fact that every class can be every race makes everyone look even more similar.
And the races do not even differ that much either. Its more or less different versions of humans. Regular human, short human, thin human, human on drugs, green human.

Curious too see how it will progress with the development and when we see higher levels.

You really think bard looks like a mage? Or Bard like a tank?

Ye, they can look identical. Only spells give them away.

that's what happens when you have spell damage swords and bows...
As a tank i have even used a physical spell book.... stupidist thing you ever saw but i had better DPS with it than i did my 2 handed sword at the time. Still the same game mechanics, just a different visual. right?

I mean, when you have a situation in which any class can be any race (which every game should have), and where any class can equip any item (which every game should), spell and ability effects are the only visual indicator left.

Or are you suggesting developers should sacrifice gameplay for aesthetics?

Exactly, the spells give them away. Iw would guess armor does too, at some point. Like a bard will look bardish and so on. But it does give it a bit of a cool twist in a PvP situation, I think.

Let me get this straight. The character models look the same ==> All classes are the same? What kind of nonsense logic is this.

Archetypes affect your skills...... the skills are not the same between archetypes ==> All classes are NOT the same.
Just because you want to roleplay does not mean the rest of the game should suffer. As far as I can tell OP wants to call for races, armor, and weapon choice locks on archetypes. Basically he wants everyone to be cookie cutter and on the same builds/playstyles for the sake of roleplay.

People had similar logic in ESO for vampires. "players shouldnt be allowed to hide the sickly appearance it makes your character, because other players wont know if you are vampire and it will be an unfair advantage"..... Meanwhile you play the game 3rd person with a camera about 40m above the character. Both players can wear helmets or hoods on their character. Not to mention the diarrhea of animations and buffs practically makes your character invisible anyways.

Don't let roleplay and aesthetics dictate the combat direction of the game.

Nah, just pointing it out that it seems to be a grey mass when you take a raid picture after a raidboss. Im not neccesarily aginst that, i have an open mind about this project wich i have on most games until i have played them.

Im simply pointing out that other mmos and fantasy worlds can have very distinct and unique classes, wich is an aspect I have really loved. For example warhammer online and the warhammer games and world in general is fantastic when it comes to that.

But again, Im looking forward to see how this project is gonna develop. And I kinda like how you can wear whatever weapon you like already.

I like being able to equip any weapon. Classes feel unique already. But, you can customize them. I think the current system is good.
