Server timeouts kick to char select and close client - why?

After a game server timeout it puts me back to char select and loads my character, but then quits the client completely...why? Why not stay at char select? Then the launcher thinks the game is still running for a while so it doesn't let me start it up for maybe 20-30seconds. The timeout itself is painful but the way the client handles it throws a handful of salt in the wound.
