Caravan lost after falling through the map

Traveling down a road in a caravan, I saw a few frames of my character falling down then respawned in the closest node. Because I only fell for a few frames, I can't be sure but it looked like I fell through the map.
On respawning, I do not have an XP debt (thank you!) so there must be some special handling of this type of death (falling through the map). It would be really helpful if the caravan was also saved and respawnable too. The caravan is currently gone/dead.
