overwhelmed on where to start

I've joined the party back in 2020 and have totally forgotten about the game till now. I'm wanting to make a DPS first then a cleric. Any direction would be helpful. ty

It really doesn't matter, at the moment. Just pick an archetype and go!
Welcome back! It’s a great time to jump back in, especially with all the progress happening in Alpha Two.
Welcome back! Now’s the perfect time to dive back in, especially with all the exciting progress happening in Alpha Two.
If you're thinking about starting out as DPS, I’d suggest giving Ranger, Mage, or Fighter a shot. Each one plays really differently, so it’s a great way to figure out what feels right for you. The early Alpha content is designed for experimenting, so don’t stress about optimizing or playing “perfectly” just yet.
Once you’ve got a good handle on things, consider rolling a Cleric. Healing and support roles are going to be super valuable in Ashes, especially when it comes to group content and defending your Node.
My advice? Focus on learning how the Node System works, gather some resources, and get a feel for the combat mechanics. This phase is all about testing and sharing feedback, no need to worry about min-maxing right now.
Also, definitely keep an eye on the Ashes Wiki and the official forums. There’s a ton of helpful info and guides out there to help you get up to speed.
Have fun, enjoy the ride, and welcome back to the hype!
It's how you should feel literally stepping into a huge new world, full of decisions, directions and things to discover. Even things to get wrong.
Too many people want to be infallible and know exactly how to play the optimal game too soon. I think MMORPGs and gaming in general ran into a lot of problems when a generation of players refused to play characters with flaws, and developers complied.
The stranger's eyes lifted to the blood red cloud on the horizon.
'We have to move. It's not safe here.'
