Back then there were new skins every month and if you missed out one month then that would be all she wrote. Now, finally the purchases (if any) come into effect and the money spent is paying off, with alpha II:3. I bought more than a handful myself, and in my honest opinion they add an element of flavor and originality to the game. If it were not for unique skins and transmog(s), everyone would look the same. Its cool running across that paladin with knight's armor that not everyone has. Or seeing a guild member or two with a unique blade or piece of armor or mount. It shows dedication and loyalty to the game, and genre. I like it.
There is no salvation without destruction. No hope, this side of death.

You can also achieve this feeling of rarity and special appearance without skins and transmog by earning them in-game rather than simply being the first to spend a lot of money on them. That's lame, meaningless, and destroys the immersion of the game world.

Of course, the game must also offer variety, with sets that look very different and the best armor being so rare that only a small handful of players can obtain it. Variety in breadth, rarity in depth.

Whatever. You can keep your “valuable” skins. All I ask for is a server where transmogs and skins are not possible and the in-game shop is completely disabled. I would pay double the subscription fee for that.
  • Please, Steven. I'm willing to give you more money. You won't make any money off me with skins.

This essentially comes down to the same argument that has been seen repeatedly by anyone who thinks "Intrepid has to do what I want, or they will fail!" and Intrepid keeps keeping on. Imagine I said I want a PVE only server (multiple threads), a PVP only server, a RP server where I can kick you from it if you do not constantly act in the way that I have approved as being "in lore and character" or a "No Canadians!" server (sorry Canadians for catching that stray bullet).
The answer from Steven and Intrepid over the years has always been the same. There will be no alternative ruleset servers. They feel confident that how settlements are meant to change Verra and the content available will allow for people to "create their own story" and that they will be able to survive as a sub only game with OPTIONAL cosmetic cash shop (note the OPTIONAL there, don't want to buy any skins, don't).

This is an unfair statement in this context. Moreover, it doesn't matter whether he buys it or not, because in this system the presence of cosmetics in the game is inevitable anyway. And this argument stinks. You can use this half-truth and say something like: "In a P2W game, you don't have to pay." Well, yes, but you still have to deal with the negative side of paying. Don't forget that playing Ashes is also OPTIONAL.

You realise you are at a VERY shitty point of time during Development when the first Page of "General Discussion" is filled with Topics like these for more than Three Weeks or so.

Don't worry bro. I'll buy an extra skin or two to keep you covered. I got you.

Real talk though. It is actually better for the game than alternatives like: "Paid quality of life".

Not a lot of open world PvX games on the market doing well. Good cosmetics won't hurt the game.
