It is still one of the best TV shows. It's hard to call GoT trash, unless you call the whole genre of the tv shows.
Books are incomparably better, but it is still a very good source material. The actors in GoT are really well matched, the budget is high, the set is like in full-length movies. If I could, I would gladly throw an amnesic spell on myself and watch GoT again.
