Costumes and Transmogrification

I have mixed feelings about transmogs and costumes.

I think players should be able to wear what they want to, even if it is ridiculous like Eastern MMOs where people run around in bikinis and horse masks. Also sometimes you just want to change up how you look.

On the other hand, without costumes and transmogs, you can tell how the other persons gear without inspecting them. If I saw someone with high end pvp gear and a legendary weapon, I would avoid that person. Or even showing off your hard earned gear, I remember as a noob enter a major city and seeing all the high levels in shiny gear with their glowing weapons and crazy mounts. It made me want that gear.

What do you all want?

I'm in mostly the same boat with you. I feel like in a game such as this having gear as a 'tell' could be important information when it comes to open world and weighing the risk of pvp. It's one of those things I feel is better answered when the game is further developed but a very valid conversation to be had.
  • Personally I think I would like a transmog system. I have played a lot of MMOs where I was not a fan of the end game armor style and there was nothing I could do about it. Also, it allows more customization as far as making your own character goes. Seeing every max level character in the same armor set is kinda boring IMO.
  • I also pretty well agree with the OP. I've often very much enjoyed having a few different outfits for non-combat situations, but only for such situations. My own personal preference is that whatever it looks like a player is wearing, is what they are actually wearing.

One possible idea to somewhat diversify armors, barring transmogrification, would be to allow them to be customizable with colors and/or animal skins.
  • I have some pet hates which dictate my own thoughts...namely dishonesty, cheating and treachery.
So wearing 10 pc heavy armour underneath your visual bikini is a no and a game I would avoid.
I don't mind sexy, but flirtatious slut wear is a little too far for my taste too.
Plenty of porn on the net if you need that.

On every one wearing exactly the same thing, I wholeheartedly agree though.
Uniqueness for everyone is a really big deal for me, so customisation or at least tweaking in a personal way, is something I appreciate.
So crafting in signature styles would also be warmly received.
  • Oh boy, armour. It's such a pain in the ass..

My problem is that female armour 11/10 times looks better than their male counterpart.
I just feel that men don't get as much love as females in armour choices..

A real turn off for me, in many games.. I love costumes, I really love them, I REALLY do!
But I can't understand how a female warrior or Mage for instance can ran around with basically nothing on and still be protected from all the evil creatures trying to slaughter them, makes no sense to me.
Sure there are many horny gamers out there, but please stay consistent..

If I wear a bikini I should at least be restricted. Let's say a debuff in colder regions or something like that..

Also, the starting armour shouldn't have more layers than the supreme ultimate xy Dragon conquest slayer purple legendary supreme armour.

    My two cents

  • I like games that allow Transmog, it makes the game look way better when everyone is wearing something different @ endgame instead of just having clones, you go out and hunt for the right legs, chest to make the character really unique. i hope Ashes includes this, everyone needs their own unique style. and not be in the same costume/gear all the time :)
  • I for one would love to see (or not see "Wink wink") that you can´t inspect others or tell what level they are. I´m so tired of people inspecting and comparing armor and lvl before they attack you. If you want to attack to gain a reward then that´s a true reward Vs risk. And if they are your allies then you just have to take a leap of faith and trust that they have what they say they have, etc. So, yes, please use transmogs.
  • I wanted to bring this topic back, cause while its more of a pet peeve, I wanna know if Im alone:

I am actually on the other side of OP's post, I rather they do not get too ridiculous with all that stuff. It really takes me out of the immersion and after a while, it all ends up looking the same, not unique. lol
I have a few other reasons, but yeah, if they were to do something like this, I would like an otion to NOT see all the costumes and transmogs or at least keep them within reason. (or related to the lore)
  • It's a world of high fantasy.
There should be no surprise that illusions to disguise what folks are wearing is ubiquitous.
In MMORPGs, people are geared in all manner of outfits that add extra Strength and Stamina and Damage and Health and Mana...
    Even cloth armor!!!!!!
But, somehow illusions to disguise costume appearance is immersion breaking.
    That's patently absurd.
  • sorry, but if I see bikinis and **** Ill play through my KS months and thats it.
  • sorry, but if I see bikinis and **** Ill play through my KS months and that's it.
  • I'm not going to be playing long if i see child **** running around or bikinis.
  • I would prefer appearance gear slots over transmorging gear. Appearance slots allow you more options in looks and being able to change at will; where as, transmorg you have to have one piece or the other and limits how often you are able to change up your look.

I have mixed feelings about inspecting ... on one hand if someone is wearing something cool and I want to know what it is, I can look ... on the other hand, I hate inspecting to see if you are geared a certain way which encourages eliteism.
  • Currently, there are just 8 slots for armor, 5 slots for jewelry and 3 slots for weapons.
  • @Dygz I don't think you understood what I was talking about, if your post was aimed at me.
I was talking about costumes, I think its dumb to have a t-rex costume or a weird transmog, when it has o relation to the game in anyway.
  • I don't want horse masks or bikinis in here. That makes the game stupid.

Helm, chest, pants, gloves, shoes, cape, tunic.. what's the eighth armor slot?

That's what I'm saying, I hate when games do that just to get a few extra buck, games that do this seem like they don't care about the actual game anymore. lol
  • Personally i would love to see an appearance tab with maybe 10 to 14 slots. Pants, shirt, jacket, Shoulders, gloves, boots, earrings necklace, multiple rings, back piece and a couple other slots. you can layer stuff and show only the apearance tab or the gear tab or both. AO had a great system for this.
  • I wouldn't mind a system that allows both. The SW: The Old Republic has a fairly decent system that I wouldn't mind seeing here. It allows people to show off their shiny high end armor if you want, you can replace each individual piece with a different costume piece, or even replace your whole outfit to hide your noob armor :)
  • I don't think you should be allowed to run around in bikinis especially if its during activities e.g. raids/dungeons/levelling/crafting/gathering. I feel like its sort of okay in a tavern or some other social setting where people are going to be messing around. But for me it ruins the immersion when I'm level 10 and I see a level 50 jumping around on a rainbow horse in a potato outfit with a candy cane for a weapon. It's just weird honestly, something like that feels like a private server - something that is fun for an hour or two and then becomes silly/mundane.

We'll just have to see what the specific lore will be for Ashes.
    But, again, it's high fantasy.
Which means it is logical for there to be illusionists who disguise their armor - just like with angel skins and demon skins and spectral mare skins. All of that is part of the lore.

So, some people choosing to appear silly instead of threatening in a dungeon shouldn't be immersion-breaking. They are just illusions that you don't like.
