House, land and farms

Im little scared that land will be like archeage where you can pay in front 2 weeks (maybe it changed didnt play aa for a long time), i really hope we can buy land forever (meaning if you play game that land is yours but if you dont play 1 month that land will be free so someone can take it) or pay in front minimum 1 month, i would say to max 1 year, ofc that doesnt mean if you need to pay for 1 month example 10 gold that doesnt mean for 1 year you need to pay 120 gold (12 months), more months you pay, you have small discunt which is fair and expensive because you will spend alot of gold but in 1 year you will save some gold because of that small discount (lets say 10-15%). Also house decor where you can buy something like special desk to give you more "some points" for "something" which i really hate. Now farms... lets say you plant 5 different trees, each tree have different time to grow up so you can cut it, so if there is difference of 10min, that means you need to be on your farm for 50min to cut all trees and plant new one because you dont want to waste time, so maybe its best that we can hire "npc farmer" pay him weekly or idk so he can plant for us, we just go to him (it will be like you talk with storage), you give him plants to seed, and you take from him plants he already gathered.

  • I'm very much looking forward to learning about housing, how it works, what role it plays in gameplay, and also customization!

Housing in separate instanced areas are the pits... WildStar, LoTRO, etc.

For me, I love the idea of "open world" housing, but that loses practicality very quickly as evidenced by ArcheAge, not to mention the poor aesthetic of letting players plop down houses anywhere they want (looking at you, SWG! ;)

I actually think the best housing implementation I've seen is Black Desert. All of the housing are in the open world, designed right into the cities and countryside. This assures a great aesthetic, keeping with the art direction... but also it keeps players together, in the real world!

For those that aren't aware how it works, any number of players can own the same house by investing "contribution points" that you earn through various activities. If you decide you don't want the house anymore, you can pull the points out and they are free to use for another purpose. There is no concept of "upkeep" in BDO housing. When you enter the house, you pick which player's version to enter (yours by default, if you own it!) It is phased and it loads instantly - no loading screens anywhere in Black Desert!

But the really cool part is that you can configure the houses for many purposes which goes hand-in-hand with the crafting game, as they have a system where you can hire workers to work in a workshop for you, configured for any specific purposes (the housing.) In the alpha, these could also be configured and player-run storefronts, but alas they took that out for some reason!

The workshops themselves are sort of abstracted, in that if you enter one to check on your worker, it's just empty except for him. I'd like to see them built out, but it's a crazy amount of work to do.

On a side note, I *would* like to see at least a few open-world houses that are unique - where only one layer can own them. These would be very special, expensive, and maybe hard to upkeep. These might be estates with large plots of land for farming, or maybe a mansion in the city, etc.

Anyway, suffice it to say I'm really looking forward to learning more about AoC housing!

I too really liked the housing system in BDO, but I would really want more options in terms of furniture. All the cool stuff was only obtainable through the cash shop, which I really disliked. I've alway thought that the stuff you're able to obtain ingame should be just as cool, if not cooler than what you can get through the cash shop.
  • The harsh reality of hardware and network limitations, quickly make you realise the higher the density of the world assets...the more serious the performance issues.
Especially when you go for a high definition realistic art style.
Especially when you have 1000s of players network together at the same time at the same place ..on whose activity you have to wait.

    Yes you can...
    1. Limit the view distance.
    2. Cull assets based on view distance (hide) / load distance (unload).
    3. Instance/phase areas to break up the load.
    4. Pipeline and prioritise art assets on overload.
    5. LOD tuning.

BDO has serious issues with pop.....where assets just suddeny appear and disappear out of no where.
This is distance culling taken to the extreme.
ie. the load distance is far shorter than the viewing distance.

So what do you want ?.....extreme distance culling.....or instancing/phasing ?
Technical limitations require one or the other or a mixture.

There is only finite memory too.
Often its a case of removing assets from memory just to let you load new assets.
  • @Rune_Relic

Yes, but house area needs to be outside of town or any siege/territory war areas. I know its really hard for servers when all huge things are together, thats why you need to seperate these areas.
  • I liked the instance housing feature in BDO, but I hated the way they made unlock other houses just to craft. I would enjoy if I did have a instanced house in AoC you could have your crafting hub in your place of living.

I think it would be better if all the player homes would be incorporated with the town nodes. if they wanted farms then have designated regions or areas just for that.

if people want that rare house in a rare location then have it be a epic housing spot won or earned by some means like how you only get the epic dragon mount by becoming a mayor or earning a castle.
  • I would like to see an instanced forest or any other sort of terrain where a guild can have their houses. The bigger the the larger the area where they can build their houses.
  • This is one thing I think the game Horizons( later Istaria: Chronicles of the Gifted) got right. they had communities of plots of varying costs and sizes. They were modular, so you could put a house or various crafting stations. This also created a form of community because you could put money on your house to pay someone else to build it. So if say you didn't have carpentry, you could put money on your house and anyone with carpentry could complete the work and collect your pay.

I do hope they limit how much each player can own to prevent the land hording that inevitable happens when a game is new. Obviously if they go instanced its no big deal, but I do personally like housing areas out in the world. Its neat to see how creative some people get with decor.
  • i'd love housing in open world,it cool to see ur house next to ur guildmate house in ur village
the archeage housing problem is the result of the stupid housing system of the game,as you can see only few area called housing zone u can build your house in and the number of land 1 player can own kinda limitless
why not let everyone build wherever they want ( just let mobs destroy the house if some idiots build house in mobs spawning zone ),and 1 player can own only 1 piece of land and make the tax heavy so they can't use alt to own multi land spot
which i'm concern now is how many house model we gonna have ?? furniture ?? what kind of trees, plant we can have ?? do our house have any function ?? do we have guild hall or can set up a house of a guy to be guild hall ??
  • If the game is as large as SWG and you can have only a certain number of structures up this game should have not problem with too many structures in the game.
  • Am I the only one that hates the housing in BDO?

I love the housing in Archeage, you can set-up a house and make other people look in awe at it. I like no instanced housing.. maybe have the instanced housing for poor people or paupers while the rich players or those that have accumulated wealth and power have first dibs on non-instanced housing. Make it as a reward for a long and hard quest that can only be done by a maxed out character and only one per account then allow people to buy and sell it like in Archeage. This creates a housing market for it but at the same time the presence of instanced housing will alleviate "land envy" but not totally wipe it out.

Make it so instanced housing is accessible from any NPC anywhere.. convenience will be its major selling point. While non instanced housing has aethetics and the ability to show off your baby to the world as its own reward.
  • and please have those Picture frame decorations where we can upload our own images.. Bara/Yaoi pics here I come!!
