So I watched the Jan stream and it was all nice and groovie until we got to that point

I mean that sounds amazing and it is as it should be ... except ... its bullshit
Cosmetics will fuck this up
Last time I voiced my concerns I have been told we will get some sort of indicator what armour type our enemy is wearing under his wedding dress cosmetic (yea I know, dogshit and unimmersive). Did this change? I would love if it did, but I can imagine cosmetic Andy's going mental if it did

I agree with your sentiment, which I understand to mean that individuals are blowing things out of proportion.

However, you are referring to the item/gear cosmetic system (i.e., transmog), while many of the above posts are referring to the full body costume system.

The transmog system requires item ownership, the costume system does not.

It was stated that costumes are only available on the cosmetic store. I don't think that information has been updated in quite a while.

However, calling this system "pay to win" is somewhat overblown, because no one knows what the game interface will actually contain.

A lot of this discussion on predicted on the assumption that a lot of players will know a significant subset of items and their transmogs on sight. In my experience, this generally only applies to end game set gear and overpowered early and mid range gear.

There are two relevant pieces of information missing:
1. The amount of gear that is worth knowing about on sight
2. The number of transmogs available

As both of those numbers increase, the ability to know gear on sight decreases.

No it isn't.

The only assumption along these lines being made is that a player would be able to see the difference between armor types - not specific pieces of armor.

Since most item types in the game are going to be crafted, and since crafters are going to have some freedom over how their items look, trying to recognize individual items is futile.

However, trying to recognize cloth armor from plate armor should not take any effort.
