Aggro/Threat mechanics don't work in PvX

MMORPG's have traditionally used a system of mob AI called Aggro in which a mob will preferentially attack player characters which perform certain actions, primarily that of dealing damage to the mob but later expanded to things like healing friendly characters. This was a simple AI which fit the constraints of early computer processor cycles while producing mob behavior which was better than the most primitive system of just attacking the nearest target or most recent attacker. Such simplistic AI would have allowed trivially easy control of what character a mob attacked making for dull and unchallenging PvE.

Under aggro systems Tanking classes were given special skills which move them up the mob priority list despite a low damage output from the Tank. In essence they break the otherwise effective AI of a mob and force it into inefficiently attacking the character most resistant to that attack. So long as mobs are balanced around this mechanic the gameplay is reasonably compelling mix of puzzle, timing and teamwork and it makes the Tanks role of being a meat-shield far more skillful and enjoyable then it would otherwise be if it was completely passive.

The problem is that these whole dynamic collapses when the opponent is not an AI but instead another player with full awareness of how the game works and full freedom to attack whomever they wish. And yet Tanking IS a viable class in most PvP games because Tanks are built differently in such games so as to make opposing players either rationally choose to attack the tank rather than another target or allow the Tank to create situations in which opponents have no other option but to attack them thus expending offensive potential inefficiently.

AoC would be far better off replicating Tank design from PvP games such as Overwatch and LoL and pairing them with mob AI's that seek to replicate the rational choices that a human would make in combat that cause them to attack Tanks. This will allow Tank gameplay to be consistent from PvE to PvP.

Well established PvP Tank mechanics include targeted pull effects, silence or other enemy DPS reductions, 'vaulting' into the middle of enemy groupings, increased damage potential when surrounded, projectile shields and movement barriers.

Some new methods which might be explored would be 'blinding' type effects on opponents which allow only nearby characters to be seen and attacked. An effect which leashes a melee opponent to remain within a short distance of the Tank. A damage redirection from nearby allies towards the Tank. I'm sure other skills can be created which provide control of enemy damage which would be effective on both players and AI.

You can make a lot of changes to make it possible but whether it would make good gameplay is another matter entirely. Never have I been able to drain an enemy of resources on any of my raid spec tanks before my raid spec tank was ignored.

I'm not going to explain every single detail on this kind of thing, it is pretty obvious there are plenty of ways to approach it and prevent people from doing this. Don't see a reason to explain it as it feels like common understanding.

We also don't know all the skills and how things will work so making too many assumptions on what the game will exactly be like doesn't work either. I'll only give pretty open answers until there is more concreate show casing of classes.

You can pick apart anything that is based on incompleteness of a game, but getting stuck in exact details sounds silly as well.

Oh, agreed. I think we all understand that there are plenty of ways to approach a problem.

Explaining the details or specifics of the problem or the solutions just seems overly specific.

Except when it comes to Forced Taunts of course, which are clearly not a way to approach the problem and the specifics of which don't matter.

Yeah like I said, this sort of thing can't exist, your experience proves it.

So yeah, ultra-defensive Tanks never have the potential to counter anything. They're also not one of the ways you can actually approach this and still have good gameplay in the type of MMO you're talking about. It's a shame, but it is what it is.

Also it can be noted that in our design space, the Mark doesn't expire based on most ranges, you can have that Mark on you while quite far from the Paladin. It's not an Aura. It's not a damage debuff. It's just 'The Paladin will do more things if you try to ignore them while Marked'. What matters here is the rest of the kit. The 'more things'.

And the Mark isn't really meant to limit movement abilities either. All it does is empower the Paladin if the Marked target attacks someone else or attempts to disengage from that Paladin (depending on the game, TableTop is more forgiving than 3D MOBA type battle simulations).

Obviously we just choose the most balanced form of empowering the Paladin based on the game type it's being applied to, so no worries there.

Unless we have a very shallow buff/debuff pool of abilities, any slow/root debuff will be probably cleansable by a specific cleanse of their type and by a general one. And considering that we're talking about the highest dpser of your party - you're definitely spending your cleanse CD on him if it means more dps against the enemy.

Also, I'd imagine that forced movement will go through roots. As in, if you get rooted but then someone else pushes you - you'll move, while still remaining in roots. I could be wrong in that assumption, though this would yet again make the game shallower than I'd like it to be.

Oh, and any full immobilization (stun/anchor/etc) would obviously prevent dps in the first place, so its coupling with the Mark wouldn't really matter.

If you'd like a play demo I had it in some thread somewhere back but that was a PvE fight against Dim Tree (Rift Boss version no less) so it's probably not worth it anyway, after all, PvE skill doesn't tell you anything about what a person can do in PvP, particularly not in BDO.

Oh, I also play Shai pretty seriously, since I enjoy being a Healer and Support with mobility and stuff, but as I think everyone here knows, 'Shai is basically a meme'.

After all, they basically had to nerf Shai PvP damage to be half that of everyone else, given everything else about its stats and playstyle.

So yes, I am "Console Only Shai" level of player.

I want to see pvp and a actual fight and live not a old video or such. Though as rusty as i am id be willing to fight you in soul calibur (on pc). It isn't really about beating ya but I just want to see how you preform. You can learn a lot through conflict and competition.

I'm really surprised that I've managed to do so well at not being clear how serious I am about these things. I guess I'm blending in pretty well with all the other people who talk about what they do or what they can do but possibly don't actually have the skills they claim?

Anyways I feel like that would be a kinda weird experience since I've watched literally hours of your match footage and I have a savant skill for analysing weaknesses/holes in someone's fighting style, not to mention that I can discuss it with people who actually were involved in a few of the matches.

If I lost it'd be because I don't play Soul Calibur, if I won it'd be because I already know the exact timing for whiff punishing both of your primary feints. The only thing you'd learn about me is what you know already. I'm incredibly analytical but also have no patience and get frustrated easily by those who aim to win by not engaging.

If I lost it'd be because I don't play Soul Calibur, if I won it'd be because I already know the exact timing for whiff punishing both of your primary feints. The only thing you'd learn about me is what you know already. I'm incredibly analytical but also have no patience and get frustrated easily by those who aim to win by not engaging.

I'd love for you to try to punish me, because than I'd feel like i actually need to try its an amazing feeling. But I honestly don't see that happening and getting that fire lit in me. Last person was a competitive player and it was pretty fun.

I don't see any reason to watch that gameplay of mine though, from youtube which would be the closest to hours worth.

That gameplay was from the beta and I didn't know the command list so it was just the bits i learned from playing o.o. Whatever you learned from that wouldn't help you against me.

Me when i take someone serious though i change my style multiple times, i got levels.

@Azherae you should know him since you watch this stuff, pretty much that was a friend of my friend. I fought some rounds against enders prob about 6 months ago.
