PVE deaths and people looting your corpse

Dear Steven,
I really hate this. I understand this is a Pvp game and there should be penalties for death but random people being able to loot your corpse after a pve death is just awful. So far I've seen people training 2 or 3 goblin shamans thru parties and dumping poison all over people and stealing their stuff and a party invite people just to let them die loot their corpse then kick them.

I feel only people in a pvp game who actually participated in pvp and took part in killing you should be able to loot your corpse. OR people who loot corpses should become corrupted so I can find them and kill the life out of them to get my stuff back.

Was about to make a similar thread.

I've seen chars looting anyone who died in Highwayman Hills today... probably specialised mooch characters.

Corpses shouldn't be lootable if the death happened in PVE, and looting the corpse of someone who died in PVP should flag the looter for 10 minutes minimum.

I saw a lot of this back in Shadowbane People who never left the Newb island who would train exp groups and steal their loot. and since pvp was disabled there nothing could be done

Part of the problem is

- everyone's in the same level range right now
- the map is limited to one biome
- people can't play properly yet
- purposely try to get others killed to steal their spots
- people try to get others killed to loot their corpses

Some of this will be less severe in the release version, but looting people who died in PVE should be deactivated from the get go.

It would be cool to have a feature like a angel that protects your grave for a set amount of minutes depending on how much you upgrade through crafting possibility but gain this skill later in the game when you fight a tough enemy that requires a raid but the angel doesn't drop every kill more like 5% chance. This adds both grinding a tough enemy with a group for hours and having a high crafting skill for a high demand feature.

I agree an un-flagged PVE death the corpse should be protected for a grace period to allow the the player enough time collect the belongings...

the XP debt and run back is punishment enough.

say 10min after that its lootable by anyone.

I like the fact that you can loot anyone that dies.. It makes you think a bit more about what you are doing in the world and gives it a bit of an edge..

But I do think that looting other players should instantly flag you up for pvp for 10 minutes or something. That way if you get back to your corpse and see someone loot it you are free to attack them.

I guess it's totally okay. If someone from your group does it, just kick him. I would actually like it, if a corpselooter would turn purple

I go full goblin mode. People who pull 3-star Highwaymen Snipers in a half-made group of 7-9s deserve to get their stuff taken because they just run around and suddenly the 3-star sniper is attacking some other group that accidently cleaved it. It's a wonderful chain reaction and I have zero shame

Could be similar to Runescape, you have X time to recover your body/items than its given to the world as a ffa, this ofc negated if you are corrupted or flagged.

Most potential new players will go and play a less punishing game...Player retention is important.

But lets say you are trying to kill a mob and another player sees you but rather than help they just see if you die to loot your corpse...This is not healthy for the game all it creates is frustration and loss of enthusiasm to continue playing...

A grace period for PVE death is totally fine...you can either run back to collect your items or leave it for anyone after a set time period...

I get risk vs reward, But I doubt you will delete you character when you die because the game isn't punishing enough 'baby games'

To be honest, I disagree with removing the PvE death penalty. Having a real risk factor adds excitement and stakes to the game. Without a death penalty, players could abuse death as a quick way to fast-travel, undermining both the challenge and the game’s intended mechanics. This kind of system would remove the need for players to improve their class skills or team up for tough content, and it would take away a lot of the strategy that makes PvE engaging.

On the character stat sheet, I see stats like ‘Resource Drop 25%’ and ‘Resource Delete 25%’ which help define the current penalty system. I’d love to see new stats to support a more immersive system, like ‘Flash Inferno’ and ‘Slow Burn’. Here’s how they could work:

Flash Inferno (e.g., 3 Minutes) – This would prevent others from looting your ash pile for a short time after death unless you’re within 10 feet of it, If you come within 10 feet of your ash pile, the protection dissipates, turning it into a free-for-all for your loot. This allows you to approach your pile and see who might be attempting to loot it, allowing for PvP engagement if you want to contest it. However, if you can’t return within those 3 minutes, the pile will cool down, allowing others to loot it.

Slow Burn (e.g., 15 Minutes) – This stat would delay the complete despawn of your items, giving them a longer duration before turning to ash. This would offer you more time to retrieve your items, which is particularly useful given the game’s travel times. I believe the current in-game duration is around 15 minutes, but this could be adjusted and slightly improved as a stat.

To make these stats even more dynamic, I’d love to see them influenced by gear, augments, or even node relics. For example, players might be able to improve Flash Inferno and Slow Burn times incrementally, but not to the point that it removes the risk of dying. Minor improvements like these would reward time and effort, adding depth without removing the game’s challenge.

Incorporating these mechanics as stats or through obtainable gear would add strategic layers to PvE and PvP without making death penalty-free. It would keep the thrill and challenge alive, even in a PvE environment.

People looting your corpse is fine, but when you die because you take damage by a wolf that is 3 feet away from you, it's REALLLYY frustrating. That's why I think they should remove the lootable corpses when NPC controls aren't fleshed out correctly.

Could just suggest that looting someone elses corpse causes a pvp flag to toggle on for a few minutes.

What if a player can choose who can loot without being flagged; something loot yes/no. if NO the looter will get a purple info and status for some time. that makes it easier for the friends to help properly. OR is that too much of a carebear mechanic?

I do think corpse looters should turn purple, but NOT if they are in your group. I found myself asking my group to just loot me if any other players showed up nearby. I'd rather my group mates get it than some rando, especially if it was a rando who trained us on purpose.

Steven has already stated that down the road, if you loot a death pile and it is not someone in guild or current raid, flagging is likely.

I say, FLAG the person looting the corpse for 30 min unless it was their kill that was flag vs flag or vs red.
