The logic behind Tank’s name

Please help me understand why the tanking class is named tank? I don’t have a problem with the name per say but it’s irregular. I mean in the same logic cleric should be named healer ranger:physical ranged dps mage:ranged magical dps etc. why a role’s name is also the class name?what happens if they add a second tank class in the future? It will be named tank2?

No, it will be called Guardian... And currently, you don't carry the name of your class, only the name of your archetype. To get your class name, you have to combine both archetypes, and with a bit of research, you'll see all the names of the future classes...

As my friend above said, and no one could have said it better.

Just replace the word class with word archetype in my post. My question remains the same. Why the archetype of cleric isn’t healer or support under the same logic?Hello rehoc!

In some games, healer is a generic term to denote any one of a handful of classes. In others, cleric is the generic term to denote any one of a handful of classes.

EQ2 is a good example of this - the game had 2 cleric classes (Templar and Inquisitor). Often times, you would want a cleric, and either would be fine, so you would say that you are looking for a cleric, and would get responses from both classes.

Essentially, your complaint seems to be coming from the position of only having seen healer as the generic term, and cleric as a singular class within that generic term. If you understand that this isn't the only way, then your concern should be put at ease.
  • Yes noaanni I’ve only seen healer as the generic term, thanks for your reply

Tank makes just as much sense as Mage or Fighter.

I don't believe so. A mage is a magic user. A "tank" is a role, not a class of character.

    A mage's role is a spell-caster, and a cleric's role is a healer.

I also think that "tank" as an archetype name breaks immersion and another name should be found, but I can't think of one... naming is very hard

It won't be Tank for long. Just go with it until L25, and then you never have to think about it again once you've picked your Class.

Honestly, it's been Tank for this long, I'd be disappointed if it changed.

I am a Tank my Name is Frank i'm such a Skank i'm going to Prank by blocking pointblank !!

Okay i am out of Words. I think the Tank being named exactly that is mostly for Oversight for the Gamers. It has no deeper meaning. Of Course they could name him "Bulwark" or whatever or so - but Tank is the easiest to understand.
