Voice proximity

Is Ashes going to have voice proximity? Ex: you can set to hear within so many meters. The player would be able to set the distance. I would also allow rogues to hear at a longer distance for spying.

Effects:
1. Easier to trade.
2. Easier to get another players attention.
3. Fun: More interesting and realistic game play. If people can overhear what members of other gujlds are saying there are spying opportunities.
4. You could also have a whisper setting that you can only hear the other player if they are right on top of you. Whisper would also recreate the range a Rogue could hear you.
5. Easier to communicate within groups

This is what Intrepid has currently planned for voice in game. It will be situational and have a reporting feature for those that love to abuse it. In your 5 reasons listed, you didn't list any of the obvious pitfalls to voice prox that every single other title that has it does. Dipshits screaming racial and other obscenities, people playing music on a loop to irritate, and various other bad behavior. This way it is optional, you don't have to opt into it, and it is limited to a specific space and instance. FAFO and have your account actioned. 99% of guilds use Discord or similar private comms to reduce your "spying opportunities" and have tools already to organize groups.

I love VOIP in a lot of cooperative / team based games. In Ashes it would be the first thing I would turn off.

  • maybe someone needs to start the worlds first in-game game of broken telephone with proximity chat.

A continental wide game of broken telephone!

I desperately hope that by the time Ashes releases, the speech-to-text implementation that Amazon-related MMOs use is cheaply available to them as a plug-and-play feature.

I always object to proximity voice chat because it makes for disjointed conversations, higher possibilities of annoyance and griefing/toxicity, and a separation between players who just always auto-mute it outside of party, and those who think it is good for getting vibes/meeting people.

Voice-to-text, especially if you can set it to default to /say equivalent, brings all the groups together, solves the accountability 'problem', enhances RP options, and helps deal with people who abuse 'the ability to make other people hear random garbage'.

I don't actually care how they implement it really, but I'd switch to considering it 'good' if this was in, and I'd almost bet that there would be less need to worry about instantly turning off the proximity VOIP.
You can always have my opinions, they are On The House.

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of proximity voice chat, either. As you say, makes sense for a party group, but outside that I've often just found it irritating.

I'd be one of those that would be instantly turning off Proximity Voice Chat if it was a setting.

This is what Intrepid has currently planned for voice in game.

Once again, Unknown to the rescue.

I join our dear Man Asmongold in this particular Topic and say -> " Close Range Audio/Talk over the Microphone SHOULD BE MANDATORY for every single MMO out there in the World. "

Players should then be able to have a few Settings like of Who they can hear and who can hear them,

( PROBABLY JUST NOT for Ashes of Creation - in Order not to hinder the Spying/Spionage Aspect )

    like :
    - Only your Friends can hear You. ( Friendlist )
    - Only your Guildmembers can hear You. ( Guild )
    - Only your own Faction can hear You. ( WoW for Example )
    - Only the Person You are whispering to - can hear You.
    or :
    - Everyone can hear You. As long as they are close enough.

Same should it be the Case that You decide Who or who you CAN'T hear.

If there is for Example an obnoxious Person - you know - some unfunny Comedian who decided to make his own, miserable Life everyone else's Problem -> You should be able to mute this Person regarding it's Microphone.

You should also be able to mute Everyone who is not Part of your :
    - Friendlist/Friend-Circle
    - Guild
    - Faction
    - etc.

You get what i mean, guys. B~uuut - since in Ashes of Creation there is the Spionage Aspect in the Game, maybe one shouldn't be able to mute who can listen.

    Like :
You can still mute obnoxious People. When i am in Verra i am not in the Mood to hear for Example how much some People hate Donald Trump or Israel or whatever. I am just not in the Mood. ;)

    In Ashes,
you should be able to decide who you can't hear talking - but EVERYONE who hasn't muted " YOU " - can still hear you. ;)
