Mob tagging needs to change

DwarfbreadDwarfbread Member, Alpha Two
I know they are after the classic wow and older mmo experience of fighting for mobs to encourage people to group or pvp but i feel this is outdated and there are reasons why a lot of mmo's have shifted away from it.

In my personal experience this is just an anti fun mechanic I have wasted countless hours in other games even in raid groups or parties fighting over mobs to get simple daily quests or objectives completed which has prevented me from actually spending time enjoying the game. This will be a big issue if they intend to stick to the heavy focus of grinding to level and i am aware they are likely planning to add alternative ways such as more questing in the future.

While it can encourage world pvp I feel as though that is based on frustration rather than just letting people that want to fight go out into the world and find others who are flagged or looking for a fight regardless. Instead it makes it difficult for people with limited time just trying to progress and enjoy the game especially if the game does develop a larger player base.

It will not, because it's meant as a niche experience.

Your dislike of one of the main goals of the design, the "soft friction, is just an indicator of that. Mobs are meant to be fought for, because their rewards are limited and only meant for the winners. Losers will suffer, just as Steven wants them to.

I am not talking about rewards from special mobs, unless you mean general quest mobs people should suffer which is just poor game design not anything niche. And not aiming of a decent player base seems like poor design for a sub based game

I'm talking about pretty much anything outside of an instanced dungeon. The game is designed around player friction at any given time. And yes, it'll be a niche sub-based game.

They have said in interviews that they don't want this game to be a game where people grind on mobs day in and out to level. The leveling experience hasn't been implemented much at all yet. You are seeing it little by little with the more quests they have been adding. It'll get more fleshed out in time. Just not the focus of the testing right now.

That was said years ago and by Jeff, and since then Steven has said "yeah, there'll be some grind for sure". And when Steven says that, his context is Lineage 2, which is an insanely grindy game, so for any normal mmo player Ashes will be the grindiest mmo they know.

The only way we'll get better leveling is if suddenly all the hardcore exploiters will complain that leveling is too slow and grindy. But they'll never do that, because they can only win if the game is designed that way.

The game is in Alpha.... most games aren't in a playable state in Alpha. So much of the game is just place holder right now. Give it time.

This is not about alpha or not. It's about the planned design and the one who makes it. Steven is a grinder. He himself has said there will be grind. So the only way it goes away is if Steven's beloved hardcore zergs tell him to change it, which they will not. Steven doesn't care about the other feedback, or at least he has not shown any indication of caring about it.

If he doesn't care about other's feedback why are you here?

I ask that myself every damn day. It's probably a bit too much sunk cost fallacy and the tiiiiniest hope that somehow my voice will be heard if I keep speaking. But mostly sunk cost fallacy.

Lev 18, Not grinded Mobs once. outside to get emblems for crafting, Grinded to lev 25 in 2.5.
Crafting Gathering now. In all Blues with a Epic dps bow, lego axe for gathering, epic hunting bow. Heroic axe. Now gathering for my lev 20-25 gear and working on farming and cooking on an alt. It has been a much nicer rider, than the lev 1-25 exp grind and looking like I will have much better gear 2 , when all said and done.
Grind to lev 25, than go work on gear, or just work on gear from the get go imo
