Feeling pretty lonely, depressed and needing a new mmo home. What are some veteran and new opinions?
I've followed Ashes since the beginning but never jumped in. Would now be a good time? Not to give a sob story but I'm disabled to a degree(really nasty crohns disease) and I've been stuck at home. It's been pretty lonely lately and wrecking my mental status so I'm trying to decide if it could be a good fit. I've played most mmos to their limit at this point. Just finished maxing out 2 toons in Eq2 origins because my dad bought me a month. I have $110 saved up and it's going towards this or battlefield 6 since that's where my few friends are, they're not mmo people. I know it's still pretty early development and that's okay, I'd just like to hear more first hand opinions. Videos make it seem appealing and I really like the look of the summoner. Pet classes are my favorite. Thank you everybody for your time.

Ashes is in testing. It is not in a state that many people would consider "fun" in any way.
It's not supposed to be in any State which is "playable" as in "playing", though. Noaani said it already nicely a bit further up ... ...

I am in the guildless Guild so to say, lol. But i won't give up. I will find my fitting Guild "one Day".
I guess I should've been clearer. The early early state of the game is in no way a deal breaker. I've been playing Star Citizen since day 1 haha.
I'm okay with growing with the game and dealing with its short comings right now but how is the content that is there currently?
From an outside perspective it's got far far more going for it then the slog that is Pantheon and I played that nightmare to 30 before I gave up. I would've stuck with eq2 but after playing on and off for 20 years, its finally just run its course I think, same with alot of other mmos. If you guys truly think I should steer away for now I will.
It's enjoyable enough if you have a decent group of friends to slog and grind through it with. But, honestly, I've stopped advising people to try it out, cos it's just getting worse and worse with every update.
I would say that if you are already feeling isolated and down/depressed, joining the Ashes of Creation Alpha will absolutely not make those feelings better.
It would be more likely to make them worse, as of now. Check back in February and find something cool to hang on with until then, especially if you're one of those people who gets SAD (the psychological thing, not the emotion) or whose friends become less available during the various upcoming Northern Hemisphere Seasonal Holidays.
Its so bad it disheartens testers. Not players, but testers -- people trying to help develop it and aoc.
And as others have stated, you need a guild/friends.
I really appreciate that thought on things. I appreciate everyone who's responded, it's helped make the decision easier. You mentioned February is there a big update coming then or some other reason?
It's because we 'know' that the team takes some time off for the holidays, and we also 'know' that the main next shift in development will either be later this month, or 'definitely not this month'.
So unless they plan to throw out a new build in December, which I personally really doubt, I would expect it when they return, and that would imply it was stable by February. This is all ofc entirely speculation based on my own software development experience and doesn't reflect anything they have said.
Right now if you want to see if something changes your mind, make sure to tune in on this coming Friday for their next LiveStream, either for new details or clarification, but I figured you might be doing that anyway. If they don't announce anything on Friday that makes you think 'I'm definitely playing now!' Feb is just my expectation based on how they described their development pipeline.
I tried AoC out a few years back and i really didnt gel with it, it was rough, combat clunky, mob pathing terrible etc etc. I left deciding to let it cook a bit. After the New World announcement which i was playing, I was in the same boat as you, deciding do i pull the trigger on BF6 or try out AoC again, i opted for AoC. I dont regret that decision at all.
The levelling process is the same as DAoC (if you played it), its dull and repetitive but with the right group/guild the time does fly. If you dont want to do the grind, just go and explore, solo some mobs, harvest some stuff - you will still get fairly good xp. I did a level purely by harvesting.
Dont get me wrong, it has serious issues and frustrations are common and painful but, like others have said, get yourself a good active guild and just try stuff out. Explore the world, try the classes and just have fun. Just remember its in alpha and you need to join with your eyes wide open knowing that its not a finished product, and there are issues and there will be wipes. I convinced my friend to get it when i started playing again and he hasnt regretted it all.
Plus with the summoner due *soon*, there will be a lot of people at lower levels to join up with. If you want connection with other people, you will get it here with the right guild, i dont think you will ever make human connections in BF6! I still game with friends i made in DAoC 25 yrs ago - thats the beauty of an mmo right, the community makes it what it is and so far, everyone in AoC has been really friendly and helpful. Even the guy ganking our levelling group earlier was chatty and genuinely untoxic.
The guild i joined does weekly events, levelling, pvp, exploring, there is always someone in the discord channels etc etc - be part of the community and the experience, i dont think you will regret it.
There will be wipes, glitches, bugs, exploits, everything is out of balance, all artisan is a chore and a test of your tolerance for the tedium.
It's alpha, changes are happening, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. There's still more they need to work out with the core systems. And personally I think hosting a life service like they are is hurting development. I can't recommend joining for the sake of the game as well as the same for your own enjoyment. But I could be wrong. I do not play on the production live server realm, only the PTR for me when it peaks my interest. Just go watch some streams and youtube videos.
go with BF6. This game wont last long.
i'm really happy that AoC comming to Steam with smaller price
can't wait to join the game and community
Go where your friends are at the moment. Wait with this MMORPG till its more finished and polished. Would be my advice.. Go on discord and go chat...with your friends and play battleground 6. If they go to another game, follow them
