The last time I played a game with such particle effects at launch it took 10 years for the gpus to be able to handle max particles. UE5 will be no different.

What are your favorite spell animations and why?

What kind of spell animations would you like to see in Ashes of Creation? :)

Any spell that has you channel power into a weapon and release it in a swing(s) or thrust(s). Think some of my favorites are skars of dusk and Reckless blow from BDO (warrior).

I'd like to see spell animations that incorporate a weapon attacks in the animation. It would also be cool to see spell animations that incorporate summoned body parts of creatures in the animation. Elden RIng's dragon incantations are a good example of what i'm trying to describe. Really like the Dragonclaw spell's animation.

That's always an issue, it helps to have specific altering of files in the client that change effects of skills especially in big fights, i have seen devs agreeing to this, i hope they agree here too xD

Neverwinter Online had a slider for other players' spell effects, so you could see your own spells in all of their glory, but other players looked like they were waving their hands around doing nothing. Like they were mimes, or crazy street people.

My PC was pretty beefy and could handle all the effects, but I still turned off others' effects because I thought it looked hilarious. "Yeah, sure thing Mr. 'Magic-User', keep casting your 'spells'."

    @Vaknar

I allways main healer and i love to see the spells have particles, mist and glitter in them. Will show you some examples.

    spellsz.jpg

Here is links that shows the moving spells:

    2. https://www.shutterstock.com/sv/video/clip-17037160-particle-ring-4k-background
    3. https://www.shutterstock.com/sv/video/clip-1039788644-magic-wisp-infinity-overlay-particle-loopable-motion

I know there is alot of particles and it looks to "strong" and some ppl might hate it. particle/spell sliders might help here and perhaps its good if the spell was fast and disapered fast? I will show u in this video.

    From 1:54 until 2:15
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfpu29OPlkk

Most healing spells are yellow/gold/holy and i like that but i also found some intresting healing effects in World Of Warcraft that would be nice to have.
    Water, Nature and Mist.

    Water Spells

    water_spelz.jpg

The Restoration Shaman in World Of Warcraft uses alot of water healing and rain to heal. I think its really nice spell effects. Would love to see some similar in Ashes.

    1:04 until 1:16 and 3:23 until 3:35

Mist healing I love the smoothnes/mystic cleanliness of this healing spells and it would also be nice to have a spell that summons a small/medium bird that will heal ur allies for a short period by flying to allies in need of a heal while leaving a faded mist behind it while its flying that goes away fast
    mist_healliing.jpg

    2:23 until 2:30 and 6:36 until 7:00
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1_t73omegI&t=253s

Nature Healing Would be nice to have healing spells thats looks like a mix between green/white/blue wind with particles in shapes of diferent leafs
    nature_leaf.jpg

    0:00 until 0:12
    0:56 until 1:00
    2:09 until 2:12
    3:20 until 3:24
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oj1G9-oXlRI

Another cool spell animation and spell effect i love is from Final Fantasy 14. Its a stong AOE spell that you comand ur "pet" to do.
    4:53 until 5:16
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7NubGJRvi0

I will show some melee combat animations that i like alot.

    Warrior from Final Fantasy 14
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-pj0uvOc1U

Paladin from Final Fantasy 14 - I like how the animations mixes between a spin and a small jump in air to hit its target. And also how the animation makes the character bend its knees to then stike the sword uppwards the enemy. Even the animation where he uses his shield to hit and buff himself is nice looking.
    0:12 until 0:21 and 0:32 until 0:46
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SQaF6L1rtY&list=PLeEqOvKrD574zzAEvZgz4yUFAV8oGLPji

Samurai from Final Fantasy 14 - The samurai animation is so perfect and smooth while it looks awasome.
I especially love this katana buff animation ( 0:39 - 0:44 in the video below) Its where he spins his katana to then crouch and hold it to release a striking hit and finish with a 360 spin of the bodey in a crouch position.
It looks so smooth and gives a cool nice feeling when u play it :P
Also 1:00 until 1:07 in the video looks nice.

    Combat starts at 0:23.

I’m hoping a design principle would be that complex spells (higher level) get complex effects, simple spells (lower level) get simple effects.

If lighting a candle has 5 layers of particle effects, you’re trying too hard.

  • I don't like the idea of particle sliders for visual FX. It's unappealing to me because of PvP. If you have a particle slider, then everyone will just have to turn particles down otherwise they'll be at a disadvantage when trying to make sense out of what's going on in combat. Additionally, having a slider removes the opportunity to make VFX part of the utility of a spell. For instance, what if a spell is supposed to make it difficult for the enemy to see what's happening? That's not possible with a slider.

I also think spell FX can be made to look satisfying without making them big and overwhelming. A lot of modern MMOs, especially because of the move to action combat and the sort of persistent ground targetted skills that come along with that, just go way too far so that it's incredibly difficult to make sense out of what's happening on the screen as soon as even just a few players are fighting at once. On top of that, the more dramatic the visual FX, the bigger the hit to the network, and thus the greater the lag, which is absolutely not something you want if you plan on having large PvP encounters. It's not even very acceptable in large PvE encounters.

I don't like the spark effects, simply not good.
Examples at 5:09 and 6:44 in this video:
    https://youtu.be/mAFW6Pkx-N4

    For example Cleric skills:

The light/aura/word/symbol effects just way better than sparks.

I really really liked the Castigation spell effect in A1. The woosh woosh crack was so satisfying. I loved how your character walked more slowly while it was casting. I played cleric just so I could spam it as much as possible

I'm really hoping for some cool shader work to make effects take on some visual elements (literally in some cases) of their augments, and effects themselves that are moreso tailored towards that happening. This also lines up with that general preference expressed so far by others, for 'shaped energy', 'wisps' and clear 'auras'.

I've got literally zero interest in pure particles, bright beams of light that aren't explicitly part of the effect (i.e the part that you as the player should expect to be hitting you), and I hate any effects that involve the ground looking different for any meaningful period of time (they often just look silly). Even the 'poison cloud' ones often don't look right, but at least those are meant to tell the player 'don't stand here'. Anything that combines ground cracking/transformations/flames AND smoke and particles, just as 'hey this cool thing happened (already, and I therefore no longer care about the burning grass or whatever) is even worse.

But please, bring on all the glowing javelins, cool energy shapes, animation lightning trails, and (low particle) explosions.

I like when spell animations are reserved for the most part - but some animations of small number of high cooldown spells are extreme. Then whenever you see those you go: "WOW!"

But when everything is epic, nothing is epic.
  • I also don't think that you need a lot of particles and phantom dragons flying around to make something beautiful. Sometimes there is beauty in simplicity.
