Titles, Ranks, Surnames, Prefix, Suffix, Yay or Nay?
Personally I have always been a fan of all of the above , be it through achievements , pvp , questing , leveling , and all that jazz. As early as my days in Everquest classic and ALWAYS , and I do mean ALWAYS looking forward to hitting level 20 just to create surname! More often than not I would of already figured out all of that days before even rolling a character but I wonder how others feel about all the above , if any of it has any effect on you and your bond with your character? Are you into generic names , silly names , randomly generated names, play on words name , memes , inside jokes ? Are you all ''business'' and treat your names or titles or ranks as a serious part of who you an your character represent in game? on the field? in the arena? with friends? I'm curious to see how our growing community feels about it in general , leave your thoughts , good or bad !

How about an option to display X titles , ranks ,etc , maybe you want people to be aware that you are in fact a ''Dragon Slayer'' but do not care to also remind them that you are an ''Apprentice Baker'' on the side :P
But on the other hand, I've always loved those long royalty titles, it would clutter the screen if it was displayed all the time. But it might be possible to have like a bunch of titles when you inspect someone, so you basicly make your own long title out of lesser ones:
"First of his name, son of Santa Claus, Julemanden the dragonslayer" (or however you wanna do it). Maybe you have the option to put your city name somewhere in there?

When I said pre/suffix on display name, I meant really simple ones. Maybe reflecting your social status? Sir, Baron, King, Peasant etc.
I agree the names overhead should be simple :)
[quote quote=1548]How would any of you feel is stats or effects or bonuses or even penalties that could be attached to titles? slaying 1000 trolls = ”troll hunter” , +5% base damage increase to trolls. Yes I mentioned penalties , perhaps you committed crimes in game , were sloppy , and were essentially branded as ”cut throat” ”bandit” ”swindler” ”shadey” or something along those lines , perhaps vendors would charge you +10% more to deal with you? players may be hesitant to trade with you.. maybe even worse!
[/quote]
Well I'd say getting effect from killing more of the same enemy would make sense, "you know now the trolls weak point". But honestly it doesnt matter that much for me. About the penalties you talk of, if you havent seen the <a href="http://www.mmogames.com/gamearticles/interview-ashes-of-creation-wants-bring-virtual-world-life/">interview with Steve</a> on mmogames, then you should go read it. There they talk about PvP and different "levels" of player corruption that basicly do what you talk about with penalties :)
In WoW i think i have about 120 titles....there's really no value to them anymore.
I think titles should be reachable for every player. Killing trolls and getting a damage boost on trolls after obtaining the title sounds decent to me. But limiting the title to first 500 players is... I'm not sure. Let's say no-lifer friendly? Could work if they introduce an event, make it last 2 weeks let's say and there will be a special title attached to that event. Whoever participates in gets the perks of the title and whoever slacks for that 2 weeks will never have that amazing title :P

But with more and more Events we have the problem of getting more and more titles. Maybe beside the "Kill so many" titles we can limit event titles to release events and repeating yearly events. Use some holidays from different cultures, maybe even not only western cultures. But make them only one time obtainable per character, so they don't get another title next year but something else, an Item or something. And to make the Title unique to the titles from the following event title of the following years use something like a date. Lets say first year Christmas event title is "Winterknight AoS I" AoS means Age of Settle and then a Roman number for the year the game is running. The names of the Ages will change with the changing world, lets say this age only lasts until we have 10 or more full leveled cities (or at least high level cities) and then the age and with it the obtained Title will change like this, "Winterknight GA I" GA means in this situation Golden Age. And again the roman number for the first year of this age. So the Title is unique but can still be obtained by players who started the game later only the end changes. Also the Event will come back every year and the Title will only be obtained once so you have after 3 years still only one title and not 3. This way Titles wont get to numerous to fast.
And for the names of Ages the developers should let the players decide what name we want to give the ages. Like putting in an idea of a name with the acronym and then after a period of time put it up for online votes so that the players can decide maybe in a month of time how the next age should be named because they would run around with the name in the titles they get in this age of the game. This would allow hard core gamer to show how early they got the title but still allow others to get it too but they would just have a different year or even age on the title. This would make Hardcore gamer and the slower phased players happy.
Edit: The Fu... why is the emoji so oversize? Does someone else see this? or is this just for me? I have no Idea, if this is only for me ok. But if someone else sees this, pleas tell me how to fix this. I don't want to change the Quoted text.

WTF is wrong with this emoji? I mean, it is acting in the post like Godzilla in Tokio! Over sized and dangerous XD.
But to the Topic a small Idea. Clan/Familie/Account name. Beside the normal Character name you need to make for every character separated could we have a Name we decide when we create the Account? A name that is placed behind the Charactername and that every Character from this account gets? So lets say the Account name is "Beta" and then we create a Character with the Name "Rudolph", the full displayed Name would be "Rudolph Beta" in game then.

Its a problem with the formatting, for some reason its set to scale with the column width... Which makes it like 400x400 pixels or something. To fix it just insert this in before the img-end tag: height="20" width="20" .
It will look something like this:
img alt="?" src="linkylinklink" height="20" width="20" (there will be some <> in your code ;) )
I would like a lot of different titles both funny and serious/cool. SmurfInHell the Undefeated? Absolutely. SmurfInHell the Chicken Chaser? Yea I'd roll that for a few days. SmurfInHell the Phoenix? Would have it on display all the time.
I'm not entirely against something like that, though, it really depends on the context and execution.
As for surnames and such, I think it should just be part of the person's character name. So with spaces allowed. I also vastly prefer unique names in games over anyone being able to be named "Jenny," but I understand a lot of people are split on that. Usernames get taken quickly and the salt hits people hard if they don't get the name they wanted. But I also feel that allowing a space in the name for a surname should suffice for that.
I guess the surname thing was more of a title-esque feature, but I rolled with the username thing instead. Ahem.
Surnames can be pretty usefull in my opinion so I support them. Most of my Characters carry a surname even if it isn't an actual option.
To me a Character should look something like that. I know I could have upploaded a picture but I am a lazy person, so, nay..
Title
I
(PvP Badge) Name (Guild shortcut)
A title could consist of a pre and a suffix. I believe it's an Asian MMO-thing
E.g.
<strong>Prefix </strong>- <em>Suffix</em>
<strong>Adept</strong> - <em>Farmer</em> [<strong>Killed 1000 Spiders in Tale</strong> -<em> Harvested over 1000 crops</em>]
<strong>Adept</strong> - <em>Chef</em> [<strong>Killed 1000 Spiders in Tale</strong> - <em>Cooked over 1000 meals</em>]
<strong>Lazy</strong> -<em> Farmer</em> [<strong>PvP 15 Killing Spre</strong> - <em>Harvested over 1000 crops</em>]
Lazy - Chef [<strong>Pvp 15 Killing Spre</strong> - <em>Cooked over 1000 meals</em>]
<strong>Prefix</strong> - <em>Suffix</em>
PvP Badge:
That I believe is self-explanatory. We could have different colours and forms. You can either chose to display it, showing your prestige or don't. Yet again, I could have drawn a something to make it more understandable, but I am still pretty lazy >.<
Bronze Star - Two Bronze Stars - Three Bronze Stars
Silver Star - Two Silver Stars - Three Silver Stars
Gold Star - Two Gold Stars - Three Gold Stars
Platinum Star - Two Platinum Starts - Three Platinum Starts
Guild Name:
I don't need the entire Guild Name. When clicking on the Character his or her full Guild name could be shown. A abbreviation would suffice.
[Kitten Lovers] - [KL]
[Kitten Lovers] - [LOVE]
[Kitten Lovers - [CAT]
All in all, I don't like a colour fest. Everything should work together. PvP Badge should be the only thing that might differ in colour. Everything else same colour with the exact same font!
tl;dr Yay with constraint!

I don't think its been comfirmed whether theres gonna be first and surnames yet, but it would be fine with me :) Just as long as we got to choose to have either both or one of them, I'd probably go for: "Julemanden", and it wouldnt make sense with a surname.
@Zention, I kinda have to disagree, I want some system with lot of titles, emblems etc. But having the amount you talk about displayed would be quite annoying for me at least. I'd rather we had [Small Title] (Name), e.g: Sir Julemanden or Dragonslayer Julemanden. If you want more then make some option where you paint like your shoulders or something, put the PvP emblem there ;) Or crafters, explorer or whatever emblem.
Its kinda like the "clean HUD" talk, if theres to much **** on the names, it will break the immersion (for me at least).
So...
1. Each 'giver' should be able to 'allow/deny' any information they want others to see.
2. Each 'receiver' should be able to 'format/filter' how much of all the available info they want to see about every person.
3. Information should only be available when targettting someone or something.
This gets away from a screen full of nameplates that have no real place in the game world (metadata rather than sensory data).
This allows information preference on what people want to see on screen (layout).
This allows information preference on what other are allowed to see (limits).

good idea's that would solve all the issues.

Yeah totally agree, in this way everybody can be happy =)
Like... my character name is Bruce Wayne, but my secret identity is Batman. Ideally there could be game mechanics around that, if you wanted or needed to conceal your identity, this would be a vehicle to do so. Lots of stuff to work out, but... neat :)

SPOILERS OMG! GG Just ruined Batman for me...
Anyway secret identities sounds nice, but how would you propose it was "used"? (I can't really picture it right now :/ ).
