I'm going to guess a Damage Meter  :)

  • Did they say something about allowing it now? tThe last stance they put forward was against ingame api addons like Dmg meters and bossmods.
  • They've stated numerous times that they won't allow addons. At least not ones like damage meter.
  • They are trying to design a UI that foregoes the need for things like damage meters. It just becomes a giant e-peen race when those get involved. Sure it's fun to see sometimes where you stand, but I don't have the mental capacity to min-max like the top DPSers and it just becomes depressing lol.
  • From the QnAs:
[47:20] Will you allow addons for AoC?
    Generally the answer is no.
There is a point where addons become a necessary tool for players to have
Parsers can have some nasty effects on players, if you are not the 1% the way you are treated
For your interface have you discussed how much freedom players will have to change it/install mods?
We’re leaning towards [shifty eyes] not allowing mods
There will be some options for customizations But as far as “true” mods, not really sure they’re going to support
Don’t want a meta to appear where mods are required to be competitive
[Exception!] Superficial mods which change the aesthetic look of the UI has been implemented.

  • The last thing I want to see when im Rping is a huge HuD with thing like that
  • Personally I hope they don't allow addons to operate during combat, but outside combat addons can provide a richer experience for players without cluttering the standard AI and taking up any core development effort. Addons that represent in-game attributes as numerical values like gear/progression score addons should probably be banned in my opinion.
  • Hopefully we'll have a comprehensive UI that doesn't clutter. I agree with @Grisu though that the first addon would be a DPS meter.
  • There is no addons.
Already stated in stream I think.
They will allow you to change the UI layout though.

FFXIV doesn't support addons afaik and people have found work arounds to use damage meters there. There will always be something for damage comparisons in the game, no matter what steps you take because someone is dedicated enough to find a solution.

They might make an overlay that scans your combat log for a damage meter, or scans your combat log and uploads it to a site like World of Logs.

Never underestimate the dedication and capability of people who really either care about theorycrafting, or flexing their appendages.
  • @Kratz I actually said there won't be any since the devs stated that they don't want to go down that route, so I don't know who you agree with but it wasn't me. haha

Haha - I apologise my friend! Too much ale in the belly! :D I believe I mistook you for Welphgryn. :D
  • if its an MMO and its popular, chances are someones going to make a parsing program to maximize DPS and other things like most efficient healing output
  • If allowed it will be a dps meter.... what else?
  • There will just be a third party program that reads your combat log and presto dammage meter is in game.

    If mods were allowed

    1. Dammage meters.
    2. boss timers.
    3. heal and buff bot.
  • No bots. Keep the bots out. Bots ruin games.
  • I'm hoping an app to connect GET Database info for organizing all our data

i do like having some type of damage meter typically.... but im also just fine not having one. The two things that are important to me is that action bars, character/party frames can be re-sized and placed anywhere on my screen... and a minimap..... i cringe at the thought of no minimap.
  • I'd like to think the UI will be comprehensive enough on it's own, but if not, I predict someone will have the will to find some 3rd party parser or such.
  • Even if they do not allow a damage meter, people will come up with a way to test their damage output and rotations.  "This mob has X amount of health, you have 1:30s to kill it if you want a raid slot.  Go."

    another duplicate, disregard.
  • Damage meter and effect duration timers are probably the most useful add-on features.
Both easy to implement by the devs.

Other than that I really like add-ons that let you save and load a specific gear/skill setup.
  • well I personally will be playing from my sofa on a big screen. A fully customizable UI would be great. It would be nice to increase the size of fonts to be readable from 10 feet away. Also would be nice to be able to customize my bars.

There will be damage meters.  If they aren't provided by the game itself, they will parse from combat logs.  If there aren't combat logs to parse, they'll read the computer's memory.  Its an incredibly useful tool for people that want to maximize their performance, and the kind of people that want to maximize their performance are usually the kind of people that do extreme things like make parsers which access their computer's RAM to find the damage numbers the client is sending to the server.  For example, see FF14.

Not providing damage meters because they can be used to hurt feelings is silly in a game with always on, open world pvp, and historically its an ineffective method to prevent this kind of information from becoming available.

And where there are people who will hack the game to have parsers, there will be people who report and get them banned.

    :*
  • Unless someone announces they are using one, there is really no way to find out they are.  This would likely be something shared among members of a guild or close knit party.

But yeah, a parser will happen regardless.  So will effect duration timers and all the other little things that make combat easier to manage.

I'm personally fine with them as long as botting doesn't get involved though.  If someone wants to know if they are outdamaging based on X build instead of Y; why not?
  • I would have thought a UI mod would be the first addon. Aren't people usually mostly impatient to move their buttons where they want them instead of "the man" suggesting where they should go?
  • Usually it is UI mods because the developers are short-sighted or just don't care about what the customer wants. Since they have bothered to mention it a couple times in livestreams, I would expect them to make the UI fluid and adjustable. Especially since some of the stretch goals have all been about individual flavor for characters. Exclusive Skill FX set unlocked, comes to mind. They have stated no plans to open up the API for the game, though they didn't rule out partly opening up web API for it. Since it isn't a linear themepark, and each server will have different content at different times, don't expect a quest tracker/helper either.
  • And where there are people who will hack the game to have parsers, there will be people who report and get them banned.
This is why I explicitly called out FF14 (though I mischaracterized the parser, it reads network packets and not memory).  Parsers aren't allowed in that game, and when it becomes known that you have one you get banned.  But raiders still use them, because their usefulness outweighs the risk of a ban.

Until they get banned at least.
