Why branding weapons won't work. Maybe.

  • Weren't they also say that the resources used to craft, their particular quirks and the crafter themselves will ultimate change the weapon's stats.  Sure you can make an ice axe,  but with enough particular ingredients you can make it THE ice axe, whose stats can only be duplicated with blue glowy iron sent from the mountains of Tulnarland, purified with a lvl 8 smelter, and crafted by the hand of a mastersmith with a song in his heart, and smithy cookies in his stomach, made from the finest Elvish patissier.
  • I'm not sure how this relates to your title, but if you're saying the end product being marked with the crafter's name due to the means in which said crafter had to use to make it.. They likely spent hard earned coin to get these items and as such have a right to them and can label their end product, that none of the previously mentioned can make.. Their names will likely be on that item or they'll be selling that item. They distributed it either way.
  • I am hoping (expecting?) that crafters who have the same recipe can make different outcomes.

SWG style. Based on their skill level, quality of resources used, and other factors... they should both ideally be able to make "different" versions of the same recipe, one better for some players... one better for others.

    Let's hope :)

The ones that are created out of thin air by mixing these regrants are rng, like the first few times it doesnt work even though someone else said it did, then the fourth time it works.  so you can never tell if its accurate or worth it.
    Ohh, that's sneaky!

In the early days of Lord of the Rings Online there were rare one shot recipes with rare boss bits as the key ingredient.
Rare boss bits! I like that!

Or do you think you will see the name glaring at you at any given point? You will probably have to open up some "inspect window".
When you go to the shop you'll probably have the option to buy new stuff or sell your old stuff. The name will be there and people will say, "Oh! Fred's Tree Chopper!"

  • also, I'd like to point out that your skill as a crafter amongst other things will be deciding how good your item is(RNG is not one of the other things).so actually, the person who craft said item would actually make a difference. a master sword crafter would make a lot more of a recipe for an exotic sword. It encourages specialisation, which means, the pros will have a lot of options. and competition will be fairly low for each item.
also, it means yet another reason the devs have to be really careful about balancing the game.

when I think of the branding I would just think that the item would say  "made by so and so" or am I wrong?

Yep, not sure what OP is on about.

Say you crafted a Heavy Steel Hammer, it would still be a Heavy Steel Hammer, it would just have Made By: Dwarfatarms in the tooltip.
  • Personally, I think that branded weapons could work if you take away the ''Mastercrafted'' or ''+10" aspect. In other words, remove the RNG based upgrade/quality modifier and give us players the ability to control it ourselves with our own personal skill. That way, better smiths would actually deserve the fame they earn from their higher quality weapons. Of course this would cull the less skilled blacksmiths somewhat but you also have to consider the node system pretty much keeps you rooted to a certain area, making it so that if you want a weapon made by a blacksmith half-way across the world, you either have to make the trek or have him caravan ship it to you. This would be a large deterrent for most players and so they would resort to buying from blacksmiths in their node.
How the Devs would integrate this type of crafting system is my guess.
  • The developers will find a way to make it work, trust.

That a brand needs to be something special to actually be a 'brand' strong enough to draw people in to buy only from you and to search out your weapons alone.

Yes you can 'brand' everything, but what is going to make yours stand out, I think that's actually interesting enough to work on in game as a new profession, marketing expert!
