Flying mounts

As stated in another thread, most of us don't want teleportation around the world. But another thing that can be discussed is flying mounts, flying mounts will let us see the world from another perspective, travel from node to node faster and more efficiently. These flying mounts would of course be lore friendly and only achieved at the highest level.

  • Devs are ALL over this. Pretty much a big no all around, except for kings/queens/mayors.

Everyone gets to enjoy the lay of the land from a close and personal perspective
  • Didn't flying mounts ruin Wow? It would cause the same problem as fast travel by preventing interaction.

Did Steven mention something about Guild leaders getting a group dragon mount?

Node leaders yes. And it sounds like it's only for a short time, like 30 days. But there could be a new leader by then as well...

  • As stated before, flying mounts are not a thing in AoC.
It would ruin the immersion of the game.
Only a few kings of certain nodes get to fly on specific mounts
  • I like how their flying mount system will work, and in every fantasy setting this is more or less true. It's the leaders on the backs of dragons and other flying mounts, above the battle field. It is something to work toward. I can see how some/many players might see this as "unfair" because out of 10k players on a server, maybe 500 of them... probably even less... will get to use these flying mounts. Still, I like a challenge and would enjoy building a guild up to own a castle, or running for a government office in the chance to try this mount, even for a limited time.
  • As I have been able to understand there will be flying mounts, but not in the sense that they will be able to climb a high way up along the Z-axis - they will only hover above ground. On the other hand i believe the devs has stated that there will be 'gliding'-mounts, as well as the fact that kings and queens and its pairs might have the ability to fly freely around

I lol'd (P.S. join our guild and this will be taken care of :) )
  • I like how unique and rare it will be to fly in the game.. I'm taking votes to be king ATM Dwarfatarms for king 2019!
  • Flying mounts have no place in MMO's. Ruins basically everything, Community is gone once flying is implemented.  I guess most people are cool with only a few people ever getting a flying mount. Kings / queens of guild castles, Mayors of major cities, and maybe a raid boss drop that is very very rare. Keep in mind that these flying mounts will only be alive for a limited amount of time. (30 days). yet to be confirmed, but it seems they will be going this route.

Gliding mounts are the kickstarter exclusive dawnbreaker mounts right?
  • The devs have said that they may have mounts that glide/fly but only at low altitude and cant nogotiate anything a grounded mount couldn't navigate and at the same speed.
I thought the dawn breaker was that large multi person camel thing but I could be wrong.
  • They don't look dangerous to ride at all.
  • Very nice find. :)

Omg, so much win here. Reminds me of a bar conversation a couple of decades ago with some buddies ...
  • ha. Well, I would say that the Dawnbreaker mounts are gliding mounts (and some might even call those skins).
Some epic mounts will be gliding mounts. We'll have to see how close to (or far from) the ground they glide.

I don't agree that flying mounts broke WoW. Static content and the design of starting cities and expansion zones are what broke WoW...and every other traditional MMORPG.
But, I'm fine without flying mounts...for the most part.

I'll still need a callstone at the very least.
  • I think they said only the leaders of metropolises and guild castles will get the dragon mounts though I may have misunderstood the conversation at the time. I like the idea that mounts will only live for a limited time and if you think about it 30 days is the equivalent of 1 year in game I can imagine a dragon being willing to work with a mortal for a year just to get over their boredom and then go back to their lair.
  • And there may be epic drops with temp flying mounts that come with an expiration date.

All the other mounts are "permanent"
  • Flying mounts add to the instant-gratification syndrome. MMO's should be like making love, it shouldn't be boom boom then out the room. I'm sure if there was a text written in the Gamasutra, it would teach how gaming would be served better at a slow pace, rather than a quick release.

... and I have no idea where I was going with that. I could have probably drawn up a better example than that lol
  • Quickies can be quite fun and useful sometimes.
  • world boss can drop flying mounts that will only last so long for anyone , but super rare
  • I have to say I am extremely glad they decided to make flying rare in the game yet still giving some people an opportunity to experience it. Castles are limited to guild leaders and I am sure that becoming a Mayor will not be an easy task.
It gives something to look forward to or strive for which is what I want in an MMO. I really dislike when everyone can obtain everything.
  • As much as I like to fly in WoW, mostly as a Druid in flight form, I have to agree that I don't feel it would fit in Ashes of Creation.  I'm OK with not having it.
  • Yeah, I was really hoping the gliding Dawnbreaker would allow me to scale a mountain and glide down through the air.  Buuuuut...it's looking like that's a no.

All KS mounts are just skins that apply to other mounts you find out in the world.
Check out my fresh new underwater mount, guys!!!!    ^.^

  • Why wouldn't dawnbreakers be able to glide? Or did you mean glide through the air vs. hover over the ground?

    Q:Does the Dawnbreaker fly?

    A:
Flying mounts in Ashes of Creation will be earned by those players who become kings or queens of castles and leaders of Metropolises. Only the most noble of creatures can truly take to the air in sustained flight, however the Dawnbreaker is known to glide gracefully for long periods of time.[1]

  • I'm hoping for the clarification question to hit them one of these days.  I read that part, too, which had me excited.  Then they said that KS mounts were only skins on normal mounts you have to find first, and they retain all the stats and skills of the mount they are applied to.

So yeah...much confusion and I don't think my heart can bear it much longer!   I wanna go base jumping with my fluffy bear cat lion butterflit!!!
  • You forgot Owl/Eagle.
  • !!!!
How could I forget the glooooorious beak and piercing "I can't decide if I love you or want to eat you" eyes?!?    I'll have to name him/her (we haven't met yet, so I dunno) Beaker, to make sure I won't forget again...

  • I want to fly on this thing if flyers for everyone become a thing. I could only imagine a beast Dwarf grabbing a hold of the fur on the back of the neck, spilling mead and laughing as the mount tears apart a caravan!
  • Ha! Well the devs aren't saying the KS mounts are skins.
The players consider the description means the proper label should be skins.
