Pets! What would you like to see from them?

  • I just imagined a ranger/summoner or summoner/ranger class combo with a whole ARMY waiting for his command. That's both amazing and horrifying.

personally I'd prefer if pets were more passive with little quirky bonuses. Even better if your cat returns with a dead...
I read this as "even better if your cat returns from the dead"...  :flushed:

Oh, could I get one of those fluffy, evil "shadow bunnies" that they showed on the live stream as a pet?  Whether combat or non-combat, I just want one of those guys following me around.
  • I would prefer them to be visuals only. Why?
Because then we will se 3 "best" pets being everywhere and no other pet at all. That's sad when games do that.

I think visuals should be seperate. And if we want to get some pets "bonus" we could give them really small skill/passive trees with 3 points to put in or something. But skill trees should be the same for everyone and visuals should be seperate.

So, this is a totally original idea I came up with.

What about a dog that you meet during your journeys. He can follow you around join in combat and can even carry items for you. He will have his own attacks and personality, and will even dig at the ground when there's something of value nearby. His name would be Dogmeat.

This is an idea I made up on my own, not stolen from some game like Fallout or something.
I had an intuitive thought of something like this happening. Past lives hardly reveal all.

  • @CylverRayne

Am I your past life or are you mine? What if we just trade off and are each other's?!

Hey, it's me, your soul bond mate. Send money.
  • I'm kinda surprised that @nagash hasn't been in here calling all of us his "pets'" yet.

That being said, I like a lot of the pet ideas talked about here.... but mostly I like the potential economic benefits pets could have in the game.... another fun resource to buy, sell, and trade.

The check is in the mail!
  • I want battle pets and passive pets in the game. As long as passives on pets aren't crazy.
  • Well, as long as we are having fantasy combat pets...I want a Yeti or a Sasquatch. Or better yet, a chupacabra. Those dang things terrorize everything and then disappear. Good luck finding them to actually beat them off of ya!
Kill! My beastly hide-and-seek champions! Kill them all...
  • I like the frivolous bonuses that really don't help me but make the world feel more alive. Like that cat bringing dead mice back suggestion. If we go the route of bonuses though it has to be reasonably small or dedicated to gathering and such. I'd rather not have someone (other than a summoner of course) who has a bunch of freaken pets that are tougher than an adamantine wall... with spikes. and sharp teeth...
  • I really like the sidekick (npc) pet, as utilized in SWTOR.

A sidekick that you can choose to complement your class, in case you can't or don't have the time to group up with a guildie or friend, would be awesome! Perhaps, even available as an NPC mate if they incorporate the wedding system. Of course, make them not as effective as an actual player... but adequate to do 2+ content... if one is skilled enough.

Also, the ability to have 1-3 animal type pets would be nice. Their design could be purely for vanity or to assist in looting / gathering. As aforementioned, interactive emotes would be great, too. :-D
  • you want pets you can't handle the pets
  • Whatever they are, please let them be subtle and believable. No flaming corgi's please.
  • @Mandras , the issue begins when 999999 players have the exact same companion. That's just not believable.

So... perhaps having skins for appearance (or full customization would be AMAZING, but maybe too ambitious??) AND cosmetic slots for them will ensure that everyone isn't walking around with a clone. Hehe!
  • would like them to auto loot but no bones on passives
  • I believe pets should be more cosmetic, and less stat bonuses, or at least the kickstarter ones.

Taming pets and leveling them would be neat. I'm trying to think if I've seen that outside of an Asian MMO though. I guess some western MMOs do that for the pets of a ranger type class but not usually for the pets available to all classes which are usually just vanity.

Ummm, both Ultima Online and SWG both had the ability to tame pets and level them (Ultima had better "leveling" options for pets)
I didn't play either of the two but aren't you referring to a class specific ability to tame pets or could any class spec into a beast mastery tree?

Both games were skill based progression and not class based (I guess SWG was a hybrid of both.)

So if you trained your tamer skill you'd get to tame creature. Each creature has it's own base stats. There are variances even with the same creature type (e.g. some dragons are strong, some are weak), then the more you use them, the stronger they got.
    @AutumnWillow
Ah, okay that's a pretty cool system.

What I meant by my original comment is that companion / combat pets are often collected and tamed in western MMOs by specific classes such as a ranger but the collection of pets / mounts by all characters as a central game mechanic is rarer in western MMOs.

You tend to see the whole "gotta catchem all" theme in eastern MMOs (Riders of Icarus, Dragomon Hunter, and every -Mon game: Pokemon, Digimon, etc.).  Though as you pointed out, there are exceptions.

That isn't to say that the urge to collect things is unique to eastern MMOs, as obviously such a desire exists among almost all humans. And, we all know how much gamers love to collect regardless of where they are in the world. But, as far as creature collection inside a game goes, I think the east has a longer history there.
